I woke up this morning with 10,172 stairs left to climb to reach the top of Mount Rainier. So, what did I do? I climbed stairs of course.
And set another PR in two climbing sessions today - 5,568, which beats my previous personal best of 3,336 by more than 2,000. I climbed stairs for 2 hours this morning and broke 4,000 stairs and then I decided to do a few more this afternoon - for 50 minutes.
So, that leaves me with 4,604 stairs to the top of Mount Rainier. I doubt I will have time (and perhaps ability) to finish it up tomorrow, so Monday is my goal. If I finish up Monday evening, my sister can take a picture of me after our strength training session with our trainer.
I think my next goal will be somewhere in the Canadian Rockies in honor of our current destination in the Spring into Summer 5% challenge.
I've been reflecting on how easy I may be making this sound for me to do... I just checked and thought I'd share that before May 11th when I reset my Striiv and recorded how much stair climbing I'd done so far in all of 2013, this is what I logged -
"Stairs - 45,557 (I've climbed the equivalent of Mt. Everest - 38,705 stairs and Mt. Fuji - 16,520 and I've climbed the 16 times Eiffel Tower - 1,665 stairs in a week) "
So, reality is, that in 22 days I've climbed more stairs than I climbed in the previous 4-1/2 months!!! I'm at a total of 53,312 stairs right now since May 11th. My daily average is 2,273 stairs. Wow! Wish I had recorded what my average was earlier in the year. I'm climbing stairs for 45-50 minutes a day now. Amazing! I occasionally tried to get some stairs before, but reality is, I wasn't getting many each day. (I just figured out Jan 1-May 10 = 130 days, which means my average # of stairs per day was only 350!)
So, what did I learn this week? I got lots of stairs in and worked out with my new trainer twice, too... but I lost zero, zip, nada this week. Why? Because you can't out exercise a bad diet. I went out to dinner on Wednesday to celebrate a birthday, I went out to lunch on Thursday with a co-worker, and I went out to dinner on Friday night with my kids and my parents. Too much sodium for sure, but also too many calories and not enough veggies. I did track it to the best of my ability, so that's a positive.
So, I will work to make better food choices this week, get my sleep, drink my water, climb my stairs and recognize that slow and steady will win the race.
