DH and I have been working part of one day a week with second graders. They have been so much fun, it didn't seem at all like work. We're through for this school year, so I'm going to miss them a lot.
The highlight of the year could be the "Fancy Nancy" day, which was yesterday. Fancy Nancy is the star of some really cute kids' books. Anyway, back to Fancy Nancy day - The 2nd grade teachers and students dressed up, some in really nice clothes, and some in interesting costumes. They sat in groups of 4 or 5 students, along with whatever parents or grandparents who wanted to attend. (And us
To begin the event, the students strutted across the stage one at a time, their teacher introducing them. The girls curtseyed, and the boys bowed. Then they all sat down and took turns reading assignments from the year. At the end, refreshments were made available for everyone.
The students drew and colored pictures to go along with each of their stories, and some of them are quite imaginative and good artists.
During the reading time, "our" teacher brought a present to me - it's a straight-sided vase with flowers in it. The glass vase was decorated by the students, who dipped their thumbs into various colors of paint. Then they made their thumbprints into animals. I stuffed the vase with some skeins of white yarn and took pictures. Let's see if I can attach them, as well as a couple of pictures of the kids.
