One of the things that works for me is streaking. I just try to stay on track for as many days in a row as possible. For me, an "on track" day simply means that I put forth my best effort for that day. Its not about being perfect, because not only is perfection unattainable, its also frustrating and demotivating to even try for it. So I just try to do my best, and thats good enough for me.
Since I started streaking last year, I've had long streaks (the longest was 290 days) and short streaks (just one day). The length of my streaks isn't really important, though. The thing that REALLY matters is that when I break my streak, I don't give up. I get right back on the wagon and start my streak over again.
Today is day one of my newest streak. I have no idea how long this streak will last. Sure, I'd like to keep it going for as long as possible. I'm certainly going to give it my best effort! But I already know that when this streak ends (as it inevitably will at some point) I will just begin a new one. I will never, ever give up trying my best. And I will never beat myself up for "falling off the wagon." I will always be proud of myself for getting back to work, and continuing to work for my goals.
