Manage leg cramps at night

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

I used to have a problem with my lower legs and feet cramping up when I was in bed, to the point where the pain would wake me up and I'd have to get out of bed to stand up because that's the only thing that makes those kinds of cramps go away for me.

Haven't had that problem in a long time.

Then I got pregnant, and here we are 4 1/2 months in and I start getting leg cramps in my sleep again. Only this time it's several times a night and the pain is really bad and sometimes I have to walk around a bit to get my feet to top twisting creepily and painfully. Supposedly, this is common for pregnant women, but man it's done a number on my sleep. I've already started getting just 5 to 5 1/2 hours per night because of the long commute to and from work and the fact that I want to squeeze in a morning workout and a walk right after work - it makes for a very long day and I'm still learning to put myself to bed sooner.

But anyways, back to the cramps - I started doing more stretching before bed and wearing socks to keep my feet warm (I read these recommendations online) and it *seems* to be working! I haven't woken up in crampy pain the last couple nights, and it's awesome! :)

So if you're ever having trouble with leg cramps waking you up, try those little tips and see what happens. It's such a relief to sleep through the night again!

I should try the stretching...I think that is how I get the cramps in my sleep....I stretch the wrong way in my sleep!

I used to have this problem too, and I always assumed it was due to my gimped up left foot. Then I found out I had a vitamin D deficiency. Once I started taking vitamin D regularly the leg and foot cramps went away.

I have a friend who suffers from these cramps that wake her up, and she has to get up for relief. I will tell her your story. Hope your relief continues.
