Another Critter...

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

I had another close encounter with wildlife while I was running yesterday. This time it was with a porcupine, so only one of us was scared. He was about to cross the road. I stopped to look at him and he turned around real slowly and crawled up the bank. I think he was pretty nervous since I was standing over him.

I used to stay in lean-tos along the Appalachian Trail etc. and hear lots of these critters. Since they are generally nocturnal, a daytime sighting is unusual. They would be chewing up the structures while you were trying to sleep in them. They did quite a lot of damage and the first time, when I was a teenager, I was pretty scared because I didn't know what was making that noise in the crawl space under me. I think the lean-to porcupines were kind of socialized because of all the scraps people leave around.

I was in a local 5K Saturday morning. The race was great. The weather wasn't. Even though it was squeezed in between thunderstorms, the temperature was 44 deg., with 15 mph wind, and clammy. I use a website that analyzes the data from my Garmin watch. I ran my fastest 1K, my fastest 400 meter, my second fastest mile, two mile, and 5K. I thought I got the over 60 age group medal, but we had to leave for Wilkes Barre to see our son, Ben's group perform, so I was waiting to see if I got something in the mail. This morning I got an email with the race results. There was no over sixty category, but there was one for 40 and above. I placed 4th out of 19 which I guess is better than 1st out of, maybe, one. Overall I was 17 out of 70 so I was one of the bigger frogs in a fairly small pond.

One of the things that was different about this race was that I got unsolicited .xls and .pdf files of the results so I could sort and review them more easily.

Ben's show was really good. Even our granddaughter got in on the act. We were very impressed. It was outdoors and the weather did not cooperate, but a lot of people stayed in the cold and wind to listen and there were a lot of compliments from strangers after the sets were done. I took some video. I was checking it out just now and some of it came out pretty decent.

Congrats on the race. Stinks when they have the last age group 40+......really???? I tend to avoid those. it feels like they are not interested in the older runner. Pretty sure I work just as hard.

There is a local race here that although they have overalls the age awards are age graded. Pretty interesting. I think that they age grade to 30.

Kinda cool - the race is the Kennebunk Classic in Maine - check it out on their website . ps if you are ever in the area nice race by the ocean in beautiful Kennebunk.
