Sleep is for the weak?

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Like a ton of other high school & college aged kids, I've spent a good portion of my life with a screwy sleep schedule. I remember in high school, one of my teachers turned to our class and said, "If you're getting more than 4 hours of sleep a night, either you're doing something wrong, or I'm not giving you enough homework."

Later, sleep was what happened after you ran out of things to do. I have a sweatshirt from high school that says "Sleep is for the weak" and then another little poster that was given to me as a gift. It says, "Coffee: You can sleep when you're dead."

So, it shouldn't be a surprise to me that I have difficulty with sleep. I always feel like there are better uses of my time than sleep. But once I crash, I don't want to get up. So it's a pretty terrible cycle.

This week's sleeping has been worse than usual. I think a large part of it is stress--it's hard to "turn off."

On the plus side, I've been so busy that I haven't been snacking and so I've dropped a couple pounds this week :) I'm almost back to where I was before my scale fiasco! So overall, it's a pretty okay week. My belt can be tightened one more notch constantly, so that's some visual proof I'm gettin there :)

This week my biggest goal is to get to sleep at a reasonable time. Second goal is to get my work done when I say I'm gonna get it done some I'm not quite as stressed.

You and I spent time at the same school...I have similar problems with sleep! I have started sleeping to a video, which I know is not really good, but it kinda triggers "this is time to sleep now." Consistent bedtime has been really helpful too. It does NOT take that long for your body to get used to the added sleep and it's great! Sleep well emoticon

Went though a stressful period of time (5 yrs!) where I would listen to audiobooks to put me to sleep.....very low volume and only one ear....
It was just enough to think about and help me to get past my mind on overdrive...
I went through many little mp3 players
Now have a little iPod that I will occasionally use...
Has to be a very calming story and a good narrator...!
Even podcasts would work.....

I find it difficult to get enough sleep- something I hadn't realized until it stared me in the face from my fitbit tracker! I rarely manage more than 5.5 hours sleep on workdays. I find myself having to do just one more thing before I "can" go to bed.

We have to retrain our minds to recognize that sleep is important and that we aren't neglecting something else that we should be doing!
