Eating your red, white and blue for the holiday.
Sunday, May 26, 2013
For the holidays you may come upon many desserts and potluck type meals. Although the summer get-togethers may seem healthier than the winter ones, there are still many pitfalls to avoid.
There will be plenty of grilling happening and much of it is burgers and brats. Some of it will be some kind of pasta or potato salad. There will be chips and coleslaws. There might even be ice cream and popsicles.
Fortunately there are also other things you can eat for the holidays. Many people will bring watermelon, one of the best hydrating things you can eat during the heat. Grill vegetable packets next to those brats, try blue potatoes for some color, along with red peppers and white onions. If you have the ability this weekend, try a red variety of corn on the grill. If you feel the need for popsicles, try a variety that really has fruit in it's ingredients instead of just sugar and food coloring. Berry smoothies are a great way to snack, you get all three colors when you add raspberries, blueberries and strawberries to a good Greek yogurt. Cherries are coming into season and are on sale this week! Cauliflower makes a great salad!
I already had berries in my yogurt and we'll be having Strawberry Shortcake for dessert.
There are plenty of ways to get your patriotic colors into the Memorial Day weekend. Don't let them be an M&M cookie or some artificially colored cupcake (but if you do, stick to the serving size!), let it be a naturally good for you food that gives you a lot of your nutrients for the day!
Today's Holidays: Sally Ride Day, Indianapolis 500, National Paper Airplane Day, Cherry Dessert and Blueberry Cheesecake Day (also good ways to get your colors, but keep it in moderation with all that sugar).
