Thought and Prayer for Saturday, May 25, 2013

Saturday, May 25, 2013

The idols back in the day were pretty obvious because they were objects built primarily for worship or people put on thrones to obey and worship. Worshiping idols is not so obvious for us today but it does happen through our daily decisions and actions. We tend to find ways to do what we think is important to us or our family and not consider if it is important to God or important as God. When we put others or things first replacing church or quiet time with God for these things, we are creating our own idols.

Deuteronomy 4:23 ďSo be careful not to break the covenant the LORD your God has made with you. Do not make idols of any shape or form, for the LORD your God has forbidden this.Ē (NLT)

Dear Lord, help us not to create our own idols. Help us to be aware and stay aware of putting You first in all we do. We know we canít do anything well without You so if we even tried to replace with You with someone or something, we would fail at what we were trying to do. We want to put You first in all we do so You can give us strength to do what Your will is and we can give You all the glory. We can still do these things, if it is Your will, but we need to put You first in all the things we do. In Jesusí name. Amen.

We canít be a real help to others when we arenít putting God first in our lives.

Being a martyr for others gives us no time for God.

When we put others needs before serving God, He canít help us to help them.

God wants us to do for others but He wants us to have a relationship with Him as well so He can show us what to do to help them.

When we sacrifice our time to help others but we donít spend time with God and other believers, we are doing damage to both our lives and those we are attempting to help. God can give us the love we need to help others.

1 Corinthians 13:3 ďIf I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didnít love others, I would have gained nothing.Ē (NLT)

I think C.S. Lewis said it well when he wrote that if we put first things first (God), second things will follow... Thanks for posting.

The nuns taught us this in first grade:
If you did not bring it into the world with you, do not worship it. We came FROM God and came here WITH God in us, mad in HIS image.
Very simple answer. We enter and leave this world with one difference to ourselves: we are baptized in the Light of Christ. Nothing else should be worshiped!
