Eating Fiber to improve health and lose weight

Friday, May 24, 2013

For a challenge I'm doing right now our assignment for next week is to concentrate on fiber in our diet bring it up to 25 - 35 grams per day. While I am excited about this part of the challenge, it may also be a problem.

Fiber fills you up. Right now I am full at less than my 1200 calories a day and have to bring it up with a sweet snack at bedtime. I wonder what will happen when I double the amount of fiber in my daily diet. I love high fiber foods and already eat lots of meals made with whole grains and beans and include berries and other fruits in my diet on a daily basis. The difference is when I do I eat like a half a banana, a half cup of strawberries, a quarter cup of blueberries or raspberries, etc. With a dish featuring any kind of beans 1/2 cup usually fills me up. This next week should be interesting! I already eat one or two snacks a day so that won't be the answer either.

Today I started the day with oatmeal with raspberries on top; what a delicious combination and 10 grams of fiber for my small helping!

I have my high fiber bran mug muffin for breakfast every day. Being mostly vegan, I find it quite easy to get between 40-60 grams of fiber every day. Studies show that diabetics benefit from the higher amounts of fiber and I feel best when I get the higher amounts.

In the same 5% challenge and wife came home for the summer and made a big pot of red beans to mix with rice for one of my favorite dishes. With her cooking it the sodium is reduced from the salt blocks covered with beans and rice you buy premade. I eat way too much, but I love them.

Well, I got in 25 grams of fiber for today but am I ever feeling "stuffed". Actually the mayo clinic site says for women over 50 the goal is 21 grams of fiber a day. I'm not sure why it's less but that seems like a more reasonable goal for me if I'm going to eat anything besides fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans; actually that would be a pretty healthy vegetarian diet!

You have to do what's right for you. That's the goal. You get a pt for every gram of fiber you intake. That's how I'm looking at it because I've been doing better with my fiber intake, but it's hard for me to hit that 25 mark. Same with protein. I know both things would be so much better for me, but we are works in progress. We don't have to do things perfectly.

You have to do what is best for you. Try it, but if it causes a problem don't do it. You know what is best for your body. emoticon

I, too, eat a lot of fiber to help both lose weight an to improve my health. I am sure you will figure it out if you try. Just because you eat more fiber, doesn't mean you can't get your calories in if you track in advance and figure out what you can do to help you succeed.

If you are having issues with getting your cals in and fiber u can always have an avocado. That is if you aren't allergic or anything. There's a good amount of fiber and its higher calorie. I love them and you can add them to all sorts of stuff. I just had a tomato avocado salad today with a little lemon juice and some seasoning. emoticon
