I finally think that I have an answer to what has been going on with my gut and how it seems to have been hating me for years and years and years, SIBO!!!!! That stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, WTF!!!!!! It basically means that some of the good healthy bacteria that is in the large intestines has made it way up to the small and taken over. Anytime you eat certain fruits, veggies or milk the bacteria devour it and uhmmm produce a lot of waste resulting in bloating, pain, water retention and gas, Yeh!!!!!!!!!!, NOT!!
I have been having gut issues for years even after I went gluten free about 7 years ago after I tested positive for Celiac. May be a bit of TMI but there were times the GI system would just stop and it would fill up and let me tell you, that sucked. I had a lower GI (yep one of those) and he did not really see anything physically wrong to I got to keep the catch all diagnosis of IBS (was diagnosed with it even before I found out I had celiac). Was having flare up on and off for the past 7 years and even saw a new GI doc but still they could not help.
The flare ups were so bad that I looked like I was 6 months pregnant, gained a ton of water weight to the point that I was so uncomfortable, appetite totally left, felt like the GI system just STOPPED and most of the time and was in pain. Quality of life had greatly declined. Over the past year it got worse. It seemed like almost anything I ate I reacted too. Foods that once were a staple in my diet, I now had issues with (ALMONDS and most of my favorite veggies!!!!). It was getting me depressed and I just wanted to stop eating. One of the people on a facebook group gave me some ideas to look into and one thing lead to another and I stumbled FODMAP foods which further led me to SIBO.
I was worried about trying to get into see my GI doc but I called the office yesterday and talked with his nurse, told her all of my symptoms and he agreed to try a week of antibiotics for the gut. There is also a strict diet that I need to follow for quite a long time and carefully introduce foods one at a time. Basically I need to starve the overgrown bacteria in the small intestines but not giving it the foods that it love to digest. Going to try to do the GAP eating program.
It kinda sucks but could be much much worse. I could NOT know what foods cause me issues and keep eating them and be miserable or it could not be treatable. Since I have not been eating high FODMAP foods, I am feeling much better. I was getting acne like spots on the face and so much water retention. Both of those have improved and I am back in some of the size 10 pants that had stopped fitting.
I am just amazed how much gut health plays into overall health.
