DH thought we sent him into a nursing home for good. I feel so sorry for him!

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Last night our daughter explained everything to him.He was going from the hospital to a rehab facility. It was hard to be there when the ambulance took him because we could not get information if, when, or where he would move to.

I spoke to him on the phone just now. He was devastated . I repeated over and over about rehab being temporary so he could get stronger. Lying in bed for 6 days and even the last days at home he was sickly so he had no movement those days either. Now he is very weak.

Darn! I got my swimming in this morning--2 classes. Then I had phone calls form various health people to deal with. I thought I'd go visit him in rehab this afternoon--but I could not get information. I did not know if the ambulance had taken him.

He says he feels better now. I told him not to worry and get a good night's sleep.

Chris

I have been through similar things and it is all so difficult.

My Prayers are with you both and please take good care of YOU, too.

Its a rough time for both of you, and my heart goes out to you. Don't feel guilty because he is confused and doesn't like the idea of not coming straight home. You know this is the best thing for him right now. Hold on to that. And as far as this time for you, you need a long rest to recharge your caregiving batteries. You need "downtime" so when he comes home you will be rested and more able to handle the things you need to do for caregiving. Its like God knew you needed respite time and just made it happen. emoticon for him to emoticon and wishes for you to have a restful restoring time while he is healing.

These changes can be so disruptive! But stay strong. You need the rest too so don't try to do everything. Just get the rest you need. They will keep him very busy with PT!

I had to put my hubby in a rehab for awhile after his stroke. He understood quite well, though, that it was temporary because Medicare only paid for a temporary stay and that there was no way we would pay more more. When someone has a long reputation for being cheap, that is always the best explanation. He'll believe it.

Remember to take a 10-minute break to "JUST RELAX" "CHILL OUT" bring peace to your soul. AND, don't feel guilty for the 'me' time. It is allowed. And, remember God loves you and wants you to want Him to be on your team.
Love and HUGS,
Audra

Our local nursing home has a long term area and a rehab wing. We are lucky to have such a nice facility and the care is really good. My mother spent a year and a half there because of dementia and mobility problems and my step dad was there for several weeks after a stroke. He is presently living back in his own home.

My Mother said that she thought that too. She thought we were lying to her about it being temporary. At first she wouldn't do anything. Finally the OT/PT explained what she needed to do before she could go home and she got motivated. It was a very stressful time. Hang in there and do what is needed for both of you!

I work in a rehab facility...reassure hubby, that, this is temporary...it's a step home...tell him to go to rehab, work hard and he'll be home before he knows it...
and please...make sure you take care of yourself also..

What a difficult time you both are facing. And I am sure though you explained it to him, it is hard for him to understand. You will be worn out visiting him and praying for him and not much other gets done. I will be including you both in my prayers. emoticon Jane

Chris, I'm sorry to hear about your husband's latest health issues. I hope everything gets resolved quickly and that he can get the PT / OT that he needs before he is sent home.

I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs,
Kathy

I wonder if he's having increased problems with his short-term memory and that's why he's not understanding what's happening. If so, that's going to be increasingly difficult for you during this time, as he will continue to come up with reasons why he must be home with you, that there's nothing wrong, etc. It also means he might fight against getting better instead of realizing the quickest way for him to come home is to work hard.

I wish you strength and love during this time. This is a lot for you to face.
