Let's Get Dirty!! (And Plant a Container Garden)

Thursday, May 23, 2013

I have been wanting to plant a garden for a few months now. I'm a "renter" and live in an apartment, so space is limited. (I'm also a fairly busy person - almost never home - so time constraints have also been a factor). However, I'm *loving* the idea of a container garden!!

My plan is to get maybe 3 paint buckets (maybe even paint them to look less...well...plastic) and then line them up outside by my apartment wall. (Thankfully, I live in the rear unit of a 1-story quadruplex with a landlord who also has a penchant for foliage, so I may be able to manage this without too much guff.) I'll drill drainage holes in the bottoms of each, then add rocks, soil and seeds! I'll get a little trowel and a trellis or two and see what comes of it!

I want to choose the veggies I know I'll eat - so I think I'll plant them this way:

+ roma tomatoes and basil in one (hello, sauce!)
+ cukes in another (I love me some cucumber chips during the day)
+ carrots in a third

I think this will keep things relatively simple, and once I see a result, I'll feel more confident about adding more bucket-gardens. Maybe strawberries? Beans? SQUASH?!!!!

Also, I'll plant a smaller pot with other herbs like rosemary, thyme and lavender... 'cuz they're so delightfully fragrant!

But best of all - I like the idea of putting my hands in the dirt. Being connected to nature - to something greater than myself - and being able to co-create a beautiful garden of plenty...THAT is what appeals to me most!

Happy Gardening!!
