I added a video blog with some short clips from yesterday's kayak trip on the Dan River, but wanted to tell a little more about the trip.
Yesterday was my day off work so my son Cliff switched work days with a co-worker so he could go kayaking with me (thank you Cliff). I was a little unsure about the forecast, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. Being a Tuesday, it was quiet and peaceful on the river. When we got to the launch site, Cliff offered to let me get in my kayak and push me off, and unfortunately I agreed. I'm not sure how he managed it, but he flipped me sideways and dumped me into the water! Apparently it was pretty hilarious to him as he was standing on the bank laughing uncontrollably as I was dragging my dripping wet body back onto my kayak.
It was cloudy when we first started, but the sun soon came out and that's when I realized I forgot my sunblock.
Still, we had a wonderful paddle down the river. There's not a lot of whitewater on this section of the Dan River. Actually there's only three areas where there are what I consider some rapids, and the rest is just smooth water or riffles.
When we approached the last, and largest, rapid, Cliff went ahead of me somehow managed to get his kayak positioned on the edge of the largest wave and was flipped over and out of his kayak. I must admit that I did get a little satisfaction out of watching him swimming himself and his kayak to the nearest bank to drain it and get back in.
After he got back in and we were pushing away from the bank, I noticed something slithering at the water's edge where we had just been. Ahhhhhhh! It was a water moccasin!
We paddled quickly away from it and enjoyed the rest of the day.
It felt so good to be back on the water. We're planning another trip with lots of friends on June 13th - back up to Virginia to the New River!
A beautiful day on the Dan River.
Cliff took this picture looking back up river at a small ledge.
Cliff playing in the water while we were taking a break.
My kayak during a snack break.
A butterfly convention!
Not a great picture of Mr. Water Moccasin, but we were hurrying away!
Hope you're all having a great week. Keep working toward your goals!
