Thank you all for the great suggestions! I have a plan!
Since I know going cold-turkey off the sugar makes me shaky and other withdrawal symptoms, I'm going to wean myself off gently.
I have basically 3 goals every day:
1. If I'm craving something sugary - only eat half.
2. Replace refined (white) sugar and syrups with natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup.
3. Choose fruit over sweets as often as possible
They may not be Earth rocking ideas, but it will be a huge improvement.
Already, I'm making some head way. Today, I only had 1 can of pop and when I wanted the 2nd one, I had a big glass of water. After dinner, when I usually want something for dessert, I made a huge mug of Mandarin Orange Spice tea. So far it's satisfied me - no sugar and no caffeine (bonus!).
I have a bit of a headache - not sure it's from sugar cravings or stress, but hoping a dose of Tylenol will get me through the night.
I've read that it only takes 3 days to break an addiction - cold turkey...Memorial Day weekend is coming up. I can think of lots of other ways to spend it (without headaches!) but sometimes the best things we can do aren't always the most fun!
