Still not running but back in race walking. Last night was my first real race since hurting my glut. I wasn't expecting much and was concentrating on keeping my form right rather than the time. It was only a 800m race but I wanted to test out the muscles to see how they'd respond. The first 50 metres I concentrated on getting into the rhythm. I thought I was going a bit fast for my first race back so I eased off and just kept concentrating on my technique. Second lap I was feeling good so decided to up the pace to see how the glut would respond. It felt fine but I didn't ramp it up to 100% until maybe the last 50 metres. I finished with no pain, breathing a bit hard but nowhere near as hard as I usually do. Got the time and found I'd done a 3 second PB.
I know that doesn't sound like a lot but considering it was my first race back and not at full speed, it was an affirmation that all the low/non impact training I'd been doing to rehab the muscles has actually made me fitter. I like the sound of that. For the rest of the week its still in the gym but slowly increasing my time on the treadmill (walking not running). Hopefully next Sunday, I'll be able to go for my first run. If I get the ok, I'm planning on only doing 6km but alternating between jogging and walking to build back up.
