What a wonderful weekend. I baked The Boy's birthday cake on Saturday morning (chocolate stout cake, made with Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Ghirardelli's 60% heavy-duty morsels, and sprinkled with a touch of powdered sugar), then we went to Davis for lunch at Sudwerk (ordered with a to-go box, so I could put half away before I started eating), and on to Sacramento to a La Quinta so we wouldn't have to sleep on The Boy's floor. I read. I took a nap.
Then, we had a scene right out of a silly movie (had to do with nylons and traffic. You had to be there), and met The Boy and His Girl at Ella's for a beautiful 25th Birthday dinner. One of those fancy trendy places with great food, excellent service, small portions, and a big bill.
Back to the hotel for cake. Small pieces, because it's so decadent.
Then, the leftover cake and lunch went home with the kids.
The cake went home in my Voodoo Donuts box from Voodoo Donuts in Portland. The deal is that if the kids bring it back to me, I'll fill it again. Works every time.
Nice when you can eat well, but small.
Estelle's in Sac for a light breakfast, then the new Star Trek movie (great, BTW), and home.
Our Strategy: My husband sets $20/week aside for a special dinner. Makes it so much easier to budget, and we have that birthday dinner money when we need it. Baking? You've figured out that I love to bake. Best part is that I really CAN stop with just a little bit. And thank goodness for the Voodoo Donut box -- gets the temptation out of my house! Great strategies all around.
Refreshed for a new, healthy week --
