Getting back in shape with osteoporosis

Monday, May 20, 2013

Well, I signed up for Spark People a few days ago but have not been able to post anything. I hopefully can get going.

I fell Feb 16th and broke my hip. I was in the hospital and rehab for 8 weeks. I finished 6 weeks of home therapy and am now in out patient therapy. I am 73 and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I am having a disagreement with my doctor as I will not take osteo medicine on the market. I have a history of kidney infection and have a lot of trouble taking medicine. I can't even take aspirn. I have been checking other methods of protecting myself. When I fell my sole of my sneaker caught on a carpet and I went backwards. Both feet went in the air as well as both arms. I hit the floor squarely on my hip with all my weight behind me (I am not little). With or without osteoporosis the odds are that I would break my hip!

I had a hard time being confined as I am very active! I run a free afterschool homework/tutoring program for gr K-6. I also run a GED program on one night a week after our other program and Sat. afternoons. This is at a community center where I do many other things like serve free meals.

I am trying to work all this out. I am having a pre K prep camp for two weeks this summer but that is all until July 29th. I need time to work on healing my hip and lose weight.
