The Spark Solution

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Fast-track your health? I was dubious. I’ve been inching along like the proverbial turtle and taking many loops in the road that lead me back before I go forward again. But I’ve come to trust Spark People. It’s been almost two years and I’ve had overall excellent results since I started Sparking.

I was eager to read “THE SPARK SOLUTION: A Complete Two Week Diet Program to Fast-Track weight loss and total body health.” The first Spark Book really helped me and I loved the recipe book too. This one is a real out-line on how to go forward and keep on living your life in the spark zone. It’s a great program and whether you are a beginner or an old hand at the weight-loss life, this will most certainly help you. It’s got a holistic approach which includes not only diet but exercise (do not believe diet books that tell you that exercise is not necessary!) and your emotional attitude towards food and eating.

I really like the specificity of the program and also the flexibility. What appeals to me enormously is that the diet offers suggested modifications and “swap tips”. Tonight, for example, I am following the recipe on pages 192 for the “Trim Taco Salad” but am swapping the beef with some red beans. I have yet to find a recipe that does not include “Spark Swaps Tips”. Everyone can find a variation that will please!
My favorite dinner recipe that I had this past week was the “Panko Breaded Fish with Tomato Salad” (p. 205). I added the spinach as suggested in the “swap tip”.
My goal for next week is to work more on the flexibility and also to work on my motivation. If you’ve been on Spark for a while, the philosophy of this book will be familiar but it’s well worth a purchase so that you have all the details at your fingertips.

Always remember that your mileage may vary!

Thanks for the review! I would prefer to follow a SF's recommendation than any other when it comes to this type of book.

Thank you for the review, like others I'd been put off by the lukewarm reviews...but will reconsider!

Of course you all must consider that I compulsively read everything and that my infatuation with different programs can be fleeting.

Hmm, I had decided to skip this one due to the reviews on Amazon, but now I'm reconsidering.

The book still hasn't arrived in my area. I bought the first book and never saw the cookbook here.

Useful info from a trusted source . . . you! Thanks. Those meals sound well worth the price. I'm love someone else figuring out the swap out for me.

Thanks for the review. This gives me something to think about. Not sure how it will work with my new gluten free way of living though. Maybe I'll check it out at Barnes & Noble before I get it though. Sounds great.

I've been wondering about the book, and your review has caused me to be far more intrigued. I especially enjoy the idea of being able to swap-any kind of diet that requires me to follow anything too rigidly makes me want to rebel straight off and fall off the wagon almost immediately. This sounds like it could help me get my motivation in gear again. Thank you!

Another plus for the recipes - they are already in the nutrition tracker (in a special section)!! That is a BIG help for those of us who track!!

Interesting. I read the reviews on Amazon, and they were generally lukewarm, largely because of the familiarity of the material. They didn't mention the recipes, though. Maybe I'll buy a copy - thanks for the review!
