Last Few Days of Vacation

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Time to finish my vacation blog entries.

We left Rock Hound State Park and headed up toward Socorro, NM. Our main goal there was to take Tommy to the VLA (Very Large Array). I went last year with my sister and a friend when we were on our girls' trip and I knew Tommy would love this.

We arrived in Socorro on Sunday and decided we wanted a nice meal and a margarita for Mother's Day. We finally found this nice restaurant that serves margaritas. We weren't exactly dressed for the occasion (we had been hiking a little earlier and it was a pretty nice restaurant), but they were really nice and the food was great!

The next day we drove through the tiny town of Magdalena on our way to the VLA. I really want to spend more time seeing this little town someday.

Tommy took this picture of me in front of one of the dishes. Other than the workers, we were the only ones there.

When leaving we encountered several pronghorn along the road.

The next day we went and hiked around in Water Canyon just west of Socorro.

This little calf was afraid of us and ran to hide behind his momma.

We left Socorro and headed back to Albuquerque for our final day of vacation. This was taken in Old Town in Albuquerque, one of our favorite spots to hang out with family.

My niece, her husband and their two children met us in Old Town and had lunch with us at our favorite restaurant, La Placita.

After we left Old Town we went to my niece's house to visit for a while. For those who have been my friend on here for several years, you may remember the blog I wrote about the passing of my niece's baby, Maddie. She was only 20 months old when she passed away from Leigh's Disease on September 6, 2009 (a type of mitochondrial disease). Maddie was buried the same day that Tommy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, so that was a really tough year. I'm happy to say though that instead of the loss of their child tearing them apart as sometimes happens, this incredible young couple emerged stronger in their faith in God and more united as a couple. They have now been blessed with two happy and very healthy children. It is such a delight to be around this young family and witness the love and respect they have for each other.

Abby is their 2 year old and is so sweet and smart. She was so excited to show me her new bedroom as they recently purchased their first home!

Abby also had to show me all her toys in their back yard.

Jay is only 8 months old, but he's already a little ball of energy and always so happy.

It was finally time to get ready to come home. Vacation went by way too fast, but then they always do. We checked into the Holiday Inn by the airport and I took this picture out the window. We're already looking forward to our next trip, just not sure when that will be.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

A wonderful trip it seems. I've been past the VLA a few times. When I worked for a senior service agency, I frequently had to make trips to Albuquerque for meetings, and often by myself. Often I drove up leaving the afternoon before the meeting, and I would take every different route I could find at different times. Leaving Silver City and going up through Reserve you can go over to Magdelena, then over to Socorro and up to Alb, which I did a few times. A number of times, I went through Reserve but took a different road a little past Reserve that went up through the El Mapais area which is whole areas of black lava rock from volcanoes way way back. That road would come out near Gallup and I'd take I-40 then into Albuquerque. I love to drive the back ways and explore. I had also gotten off I-25 past Socorro and gone through Mountainaire, a small town, and then took another road up north that came out at Tijeras Canyon, east of Albuquerque on I-40. So much more interesting than just following the interstate all the time. I love exporing!

Thanks again for sharing, Cindy:) I'll agree with LibbyG7 -- you most definitely have a gift. Your eye for composition is perfect. More than that, you capture the mood of a place. Beautiful!
Here's to many more holidays to document!

I hope you take up photography professionally some day, Cindy. You have the 'eye' and a gift.

So glad you had this terrific vacation....I loved New Mexico --- and wish I'd found the places you went to. We pretty much stayed on the beaten path from Albuquerque to Santa Fe to Taos......except we took a road that passed through the 'ghost towns' - old mining towns, now deserted.

The sights of NM are forever implanted in my memory - I have some good shots also - alas, not digital......

    Welcome home.
