Meeting Shannon

Iíve been fortunate enough to meet a lot of the SparkCelebs in person--you know, SparkGuy, Coach Nicole, etc. And it was exciting, trust me. I tried to play it a little cool, not to freak out too much, so they wouldnít have to get a SparkStalker restraining order or anything. :) Theyíve all been really great people, a very down-to-earth bunch.

But you know whatís absolutely, positively just as exciting? Meeting a SparkBuddy in person! And I donít have to play it cool! Iíve only had the opportunity to meet one other buddy in person, Ďtil now. Yesterday, my buddy and leader of the Hula Hoop All Stars team, Shannon (DAMIERE) was passing through my town on her way to a hoop festival. She lives about two hours away. We keep saying weíre going to get together and hoop someday. Well, yesterday was that day! She stopped in for a visit. Even better, it was right after I picked up the girls from school, so Audrey and Emily were able to hang out as well. Audrey is hero-worshipping Shannon now. I think she wants the green hair (me too!). Lol.

We had such a fun time! You know how you can meet someone for the first time and itís like youíre already old friends? So far, Iím two for two with that, as far as SparkBuddies go. I think itís because we share so much of this journey together online, we already have a history by the time we meet. Anyway, we hooped and Shannon showed us some cool toys sheís learning. Audrey wants a contact staff now... Shannon got to meet Chubbs and Pudding (bonus) and Randy and Logan. It was just a really fun afternoon. How cool is it that you can meet a buddy and play, play, play?

I know SparkBuddies that meet and do 5Ks together. I have a friend whoís planning a vacation with buddies sheís never met before. It must sound crazy to people who arenít drinking the SparkKoolaid. Ha ha. But what a cool and interesting community that can be supportive enough to build relationships that can periodically cross over from online to in-person. Like Iíve said, it takes a SparkVillage. Iím curious, how many of you have had the opportunity to meet SparkBuddies in person?

There's actually a whole bunch of Sparkers in my area. While some I'm not "sparkbuddies" with, a lot of us tend to be facebook friends... what can I say, I have a lot of former classmates that have been on the weight loss battle. Actually, now that I think about it, that doesn't say a whole lot about our area if most of us end up overweight. I suppose the better thing is that we want to lose it and are choosing healthy ways of doing it. I definitely need to start getting together with my local buddies more though. Gym buddies are definitely going to need to be in order after I have this baby!

    Shelli,

What a fun time! So cool that you got to meet Shannon. She is an amazing hooper - just like you are! Looks like you are feeling better in this video.

I met my Making it Happen team coach JMERLAU while I was storm chasing in TX. I live in the Chicago suburbs. Two years ago, I was on a 10-day severe thunderstorm/storm chasing trip with the meteorology students from the college that I work at. I was blogging my experiences daily to my Spark team. When I got within an hour of Jerome's house, he drove and met me at the hotel we were staying at. We only spent about an hour chatting, but it was great to meet and connect with a fellow Sparker.

Last year, fellow teammate CARLA0716 came from New Brunswick, Canada for a week to celebrate her 40th birthday in Chicago. HEALTHDUDE, who lives about 20 miles from me but we had never met in person, joined us for a couple of outings in the city. That was so much fun. And you are right - even though we'd never met in person before, it felt like we were childhood friends. My beau was concerned that I would open my house up to a complete stranger and trust her there alone while I was at work. But it just didn't occur to me that someone I "knew" so well online would be anything but the lovely person that she was/is! And after she left, my beau admitted that he was worried for nothing and that she really was a wonderful house guest. Spark people are the greatest!

My beau is from Wapakoneta, OH. I just Mapquested it - it's about 2 hours from Fairfield, but in the wrong direction from where we're coming in Chicago. Who knows, maybe some day, we'll get to meet in person!

Keep on Sparking and inspiring!

Yes Shelli, it is very exciting and surreal to meet Sparkfriends in person. I was lucky enough to meet 2 in Sydney and sadly they are no longer sparking. One was from Vancouver, the other from a town about 2 hrs from me. I tried for a 3rd during the Elvis Festival but things got mixed up.

Attempting to use frequent flyer points in Oct for a wedding in Canada. Trying to swing in a stopover in Memphis so we can finally visit Graceland and all things Elvis. How easy and how long is it to get to your town with bus transport? What is the nearest airport to you?

If I can dream...

What fun! My hoop always falls to my ankles, but then again, it's a kids hoop from Walmart. Isn't it great to have Spark friends?

This was so cute. What a fun day to meet and hoop with one of your spark buddies! Looked like you had so much fun! I actually got together with two awesome spark friends yesterday and we did a 5 mile race. It's actually very cool because half ways through they open a drawbridge, therefore the name "Beat the Bridge" race. We made it before the bridge opened and did the whole 5 miles. Was so much fun to do with both of them. We ran one other race together too and then I ran a jingle bell race with one of them last December. So much fun making friends on and off line. Keep hoopin and sparkin! You are awesome!!!!

I've never met a sparkbuddie in person, but would love to some day. I have made some lasting friendships through joining a photographer's guild. The guild has folded, but a new unofficial club has formed with these friends. The friendships are still going strong with this common hobby.

I've also become a member of the NE Texas Trails on Facebook. Would love some friendships to form out of that so I could find someone to ride bikes on the trails with. No one in my immediate circle of friends or family are interested, so I'm thinking of reaching out through this club. If it does, I will have to buy a bike!

That is awesome. I use to get together with some other local Sparkers when I lived in Washington. I have a spark friend here in Florida that I has been supporting and i have been getting support from since 2007. We need to meet up. She only lives about 10 minutes from me. She has been a real inspiration to me.

Shannon really is an ACE hooper, isn't she?!

And Audrey - she can foot hoop! That's amazing!

then Emily and that clever waist hoop to above-head-hooping

and you catching that ...er... what IS it called?!

Well done to you all and thanks for sharing your fun.

(It's not quite the same without Gunner though - you must really miss him - I do, and I didn't ever have the privilege of meeting him. I wonder if he's dog-hooping in heaven?!)

I am going to have to learn how to play. Also, unless I was mistaken, aren't Chubbs and Pudding guinea pigs, I adore guinea pigs. Thanks for sharing.
