Fitness Nursing?

Thursday, May 16, 2013

I have been trying to find a way to incorporate my passion for fitness and nutrition into a career. I have my Bachelors in Nursing, so I am thinking that I could use that and be able to help others become healthier. I would like to create workout programs, nutrition plans, monitor clients as they become healthier using a holistic approach, and also help to guide them spiritually in their relationship with Christ. The problem? I haven't figured out exactly what to do with it, and I don't want to put a ton of money into a new program... I have been researching online to see what I could do, and I found a site about "fitness nursing." It sounds a lot like a personal trainer/nutritionist/health coach, but it also incorporates nursing assessments (vital signs, health history, helping treat things such as diabetes/hypertension/etc). It said that most are self-employed, but you could also be hired by a gym/fitness center, doctor's office, or even a company in their wellness department. I would need to find a way to work it around my current job, since I'm not sure how stable this would be as I am just getting started (and as I get "older"-lol). I was so excited last night when I found an actual site about this career- that there is an actual NAME for what I want to do! Going to continue to brainstorm, research, and pray for God's guidance in this! I really feel that He is leading me in this direction. If not in this exact position, something very similar!

This sounds like a wonderful career! I've often thought that if I hired a personal trainer I'd want them to know not only how to help me get fit and lose weight, but also have some insight into injuries and other health concerns. Fitness Nursing takes it a step farther and I would think you' d have people jumping at the chance to hire you! Keep praying and see where God leads you!

Our work has a "Be Well" campaign they do, and they have a lot of things they provide with our insurance company. There was at one time weekly seminars and "lifestyle coaches" that came to help people reach whatever goals they had. There was one in particular I really liked that was right along the lines of what you are talking about. Sounds awesome, I hope it works out for you :)
