Kind of sad, kind of exciting

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

My office is moving to a new location at the end of the week. We've been in this space for 10 years. It's a big, beautiful space. For the last 6 years our little team of 10 have been at this location all alone. Everyone on the rest of the floor either left for other firms or were moved to the other local offices of the new company when our company was purchased by another. It's been really nice here all alone, and like I said, our space is big and beautiful, so it will be hard to leave. But, I have a list of things I hate about this location, downtown Portland, as long as my arm.

So now we're working around boxes and bins of garbage and watching the place empty out, and it feels sad. Our new space is significantly smaller, not as elegant, and we'll be sharing some of the common areas with other people in our firm. A lot to get used to.

But the absolutely best thing about it is that it's very close to my house!!! I'm so excited! Every morning now the drive to work through multiple freeways is like a battle, and driving through downtown Portland is an obstacle course with cars, people, trucks and bicyclists everywhere, darting in front of you from every angle. They moved all the bus and tram lines to both sides of our building a few years ago, so we're also dodging those just to get from the parking garage to our building. And parking is $200 a month!

Now I'm a short drive down only one freeway, free of pedestrians and bicycles, and no cost to park! So excited!!! The building we're in also has a mini gym available to all tenants - no charge. I'm going to check that out! And getting to know some of the other people who work for our company will be nice too. Change is always a little scary - but exciting too. So let the adventure begin!

Oh Shari, change is always challenging, even when it's good, but how healthy of you to mourn the losses, and then also recognize and experience the opportunities and benefits! I can't wait to hear how it goes!

Sounds like an opportunity to unload some stress. I hope your new digs work out well for you. It seems like it will be a good trade.

Enjoy the move and embrace the change! It can be so hard, but it sounds like you are on the right track by focusing on the positives! And the traffic?? I was there over the weekend and it was a nightmare!! On our way into Portland they had a wreck on every bridge so everything was slow. Then we had to drive from Jantzen Beach to Newberg mid-day on Saturday. It took us 1.25 hours to drive the 25 miles. Ugh!! I can definitely see eliminating your commute as a good thing!
