Four Years at Spark People!

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Yesterday, May 11, made it four year here. Just checking in at my start week Spark team, it appears that very few of us are left . . . I did hear from team buddy JOPAPGH who has been burning up the running trails big time.

Although I consider the At Goal and Maintaining Team to be an invaluable source of information and motivation, I'm not a great team person myself -- mostly use Spark to track nutrition and fitness, and to keep in touch with Spark friends by reading their blogs and commenting on them. The team challenges, recipes and other resources aren't so much for me: but I see that they are very important to others here. That's gotta be Spark's own secret of success: the ability to diversify and meet the needs of so many.

People fade away when they've achieved weight loss -- or when they've given up -- and I do miss a lot of wonderful Spark friends who've disappeared over the four years. But: so be it. I know that for myself, continued tracking will be key to maintaining weight loss. And despite occasional frustrations with the site (the commercialism! the occasional culture shock for an unredeemed Canuck!) I continue to be grateful for all that Spark offers.

With every year that passes with me continuing to fit into my size 8s, I believe more and more strongly that it's possible to take weight off and to keep it off. Spark is a big part of what's made that possible for me. So thanks, Spark People! And even more important, thanks Spark people . . . all of you terrific individuals who've from time to time let me share your lives and struggles and triumphs! I continue to learn from you and to enjoy your friendship. Together we're stronger, more than the sum of our individual selves!

Happy Sparkversary Ellen! You remind me that I also have been here 4 yrs or so. Its good to know so many maintainers are still around. I agree it is sad to lose some of our friends. I think it is those who have found a way to use this site for their own needs which keeps us true to spark. i use the site much as you do. As you said, spark can meet the needs of so many. That is the key to their success. I hope to continue seeing you here on this site for many more years and value as a great spark friend!

I agree that the beauty of SP is the wide variety of resources it provides for us. And I consider the connections we make here with others to be the most important of them all.

Congratulations on your success here - and thanks for being a good SP friend.

I'm so glad there are maintainers here as well as 'losers.' LOL

Happy Anniversary! That reminds me that I have been here almost four years, too... While my success is not as clear as yours, I am still 10 pounds below where I started, and that's worth something!

Sending you continued good wishes for success!

Way to go on four years. I agree that the beauty of SP is the diversity of resources and tools and tricks. I'm not really into spinning the spark wheel for example. But each day I learn something new on this site, or find inspiration or support (like from you, thank you Ellen). It's quite an amazing resource.

I agree - the diversity of the site makes it 'work' for many of us and I do miss some fellow sparkies, particularly WALKINGANNIE...
Here's to 4 more years! emoticon

Great job on maintaining for four years and fitting that size 8. I am inspired that I can follow your lead and keep this weight off. I also believe in tracking and in sparking. I think this keeps me focused and accountable.

I have noticed in my shorter time, a disappearance of people. That is why I so appreciate the friends who blog and stay at Spark.

I am not planning on disappearing either.

I always enjoy your informative and thoughtful blogs.

Happy Sparkversary! You joined 3 months before I did although I only lurked for the first 3 years before I found my voice. You're right. There's something for everyone here. I'm glad I got to know you and hope you won't be one of those who disappear.

Here in the U.S. when we say "Happy 4th" we're talking about our Independence Day, but in a sense you are too!

All things change over time and perhaps it is another lesson to be learned here at SP just as in life. Adapt and grow or complain and become bitter about changes. You have gracefully adapted and been kind enough to share your positivity and journey with us.

Thank you for being you.

emoticon I find the wide variety of teams to be most helpful. As things change in life, we pick up kindred spirits from different sources. Who was it said folks come into our lives for "a reason, a season, or a lifetime." All of these are ways we help each other along the way. I miss several people who were keys in my Spark journey but have become inactive, for whatever reason... but interestingly, others come back like the seasons!

And some keep on keeping on... as I hope to do... becoming friends, and in some cases, face to face friends! What a great meeting place this has turned out to be, and what an important motivational factor in my own life.

Congratulations on sticking with it for so long!! I too, am not so much involved with the teams, challenges, cooking, etc. I am a one on one person and don't play well with groups. I just prefer to follow friends on their blogs. For me its all about tracking. That was what I first used Sparkpeople for and still am faithful doing. The bonus was meeting such wonderful folks like you along the way to get motivation and inspiration from!
Happy Maintaining!

Once in a while I go over to my starting week team and try to spark things up but it is stone cold dead over there.
I hope, like me, they have found a few friends and other teams that keep them moving along but I wonder...
Congrats to you!
