Be Sure To Stretch After Your Workout!

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

I made a terrible mistake on Saturday and I'd like all my friends to learn from it.

I have a stepper in my living room and one of my favorite workouts is step-ups, vigorous step-ups! I have reached a point where I can do step-ups for an hour while I watch TV, it's my best way to watch shows that I love.

Because I have been enjoying the Spartacus workouts so much, I took a long break from the stepper, almost two months. So on Saturday morning, because I woke up feeling very energetic, I decided to do some step-ups after my Spartacus workout. The mistake I made is that I did not stretch after my workout. Boy have I paid dearly for that mistake! My calf muscles have been sore since Sunday. The pain is so bad that walking is not very comfortable. I have tried deep heat but it isn't helping much. I can actually feel the tightness in the muscle. Of course I have been trying to stretch the muscles since Sunday but I guess it's a case of too little too late. And now it is quite painful to stretch.

Dear friends, please learn from me. STRETCH AFTER YOUR WORKOUTS, when your muscles are still warm!

Try stretching in the morning before you get up. The muscles are naturally warm. I stretch every day before I get up and it has become a habit.

What a great reminder, but a day late for me too...lol! I started back to brisk walking yesterday and got distracted right after my 3 miles. Feeling it this morning! We live, we learn... hopefully.
Have a wonderful day and be gentle to yourself!

I totally agree with you after coming out of an injury. It's critical to stretch for several reasons. Stretching after a run helps towards prevention of DOMS! (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) I've also started to do a pre-run warmup about 5 minutes of a slow jog then a light stretch of my quads, dynamic stretch of my IT Band, glutes, hip flexor, calves, and Achilles. I've found that I can go out and get right into my "race pace." All the best and cool runnings!

I actually used to limp the day after a run before I realized the importance of stretching.
Lots of backpain, hip pain, knee pain etc in active people can be reduced with proper stretching after exercise and even on days you don't exercise.
Stretches have helped me control my postural related back pain and I was in a corset at some point, now I am back to running HMs. So I totally agree with Lucy
