I haven't done a blog in a while - life is just so busy! But I've been plugging along, eating right, exercising.... and losing NO weight. For quite a long time. I've actually been maintaining my 10 pound weight gain that happened over the course of last summer with 80 hour work weeks followed immediately by surgery for breast cancer and then radiation treatments.
I did a lot of reading and decided my problem was loss of muscle, leading to a slower metabolism. So I decreased in the aerobic exercise, amped up the weight training and also increased my protein percentages. And finally, after doing this for 5 weeks I lost two whole pounds. The right direction but still mighty slow. And it isn't like I'm down to my last 10 pounds or anything. For my height, I still have a good 35 pounds of fat that needs to go.
So I found one more idea to try. I figured it couldn't hurt and it has actually started to turn things around and get me back to a pound per week of weight loss for the last 3 weeks. It's called intermittent fasting. There's a book out about it that I hear mixed reviews on and I'm not interested in following, but the concept is to limit the hours during which you will eat. The recommendation is eight hours of the day for eating and the other 16 for fasting, but I can't quite accomplish that with my schedule. So I gave myself some leeway, shot for 9 to 10 hours a day for all my meals and snacks to fit into, with the rest of the time fasting. No nibbling at all - especially at night. That is probably my biggest boost, to be honest.
So most days I have breakfast later than usual, between 9 and 10 a.m. and I finish all my meals and snacks by 6 or 7 p.m. And the scale is steadily falling, finally. Nothing magic or anything and it isn't always easy, but after the first few days I found myself forgetting about food and not wanting to nibble this and that. For me, it's a breakthrough and I hope it continues for a while before my sluggish metabolism kicks in again.
