Yesterday was the memorial 5K I had signed up for about a month ago. It was my first one, and I had only been running for about two weeks at that time. My 13 year old daughter, her friend, and her friend's parents also did it. When I woke up, the day was dreary: cool, rainy, generally blechy. I was excited anyway, but a little bummed at the prospect of getting soaked. I was really more concerned that my iphone might get wet and I cannot imagine running without music! My husband had made me an awesome playlist the night before, with a few surprise songs in it, and I wanted to have it with me! By the time we got over to the location, the sun started breaking through, and when the starting horn went off, it was beautiful out! I ran with the pack and eventually had my own space. We ran past houses where people stood outside clapping, and the first water station actually made me choke up a little when I saw the volunteers selflessly handing out water! I'm such a sap! I'm not that familiar with the area, so when I finally saw the back of the school and realized I was close to the finish line, I couldn't believe it! I finished in less that 30 minutes if I subtract a bit for how far away I was from the start line, and 30 minutes was my best ever time in training, so I was very happy. More than that, it was just the feeling that I had done something for myself, by myself, that I had set out to do and it was something I NEVER thought I would do in my life! I think most of this game is mental, and there is just a great feeling of overcoming the desire to give up, slow down, take it easy, etc. Thanks to all the support I've gotten from people I only know through Spark!
