Social Networking vs. The Real Thing

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Man, I've been a SparkPeople Member on and off for a couple of years. I join hoping that I will find a local network and actually MEET another SparkPerson or two live & in person - I'm looking for support in the form of workout buddies/friends. I think SparkPeople has some great tools but is really lacking in person-to-person contact.

I've been a Member of my local SparkGroup, like, local as in.... my actual city has a Group and on and off for a couple of years I've been looking for a walking partner and have had exactly ZERO takers. I'm floored. I don't get it. Working out, being active is WAY MORE FUN when you do it with somebody.

So, now, I've decided to be a Event Host for a local Group. I've posted this in my local SparkTeam's page... we'll see if anybody joins me for some local hikes & some wilderness hikes. I seriously freaking doubt anybody from SparkPeople will join me... but... hey.... you never know.

I totally understand how you feel. I'm always hopeful that I'll meet up with someone from Spark Portland and we'll click and connect and can be workout/walking/running buddies. I've been fortunate that I've met and made great friends via Spark, but everyone's lives are so busy and different that it's hard to coordinate time to get together.
Be ever hopeful. I think your step in working with a MeetUp group is a great idea. As is often the case, I'm not sure if my schedule would ever work out to where I could join the group, but I will certainly keep it in mind for upcoming events.
