This isn’t an official race report, but my husband and I signed up for the Road Runner Sports Adventure Run in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. Offered on the second Thursday of each month, the goal of the part scavenger hunt/part road race is to collect as many raffle tickets as you can in an hour to win some cool prizes from RRS and other local businesses (and, if you are speedy enough, get a five mile or more run in).
I’m so glad the weather cleared up by mid-afternoon this past Thursday, because this was way more exciting than getting on the treadmill.
Lots of neon yellow. Buying the official “Adventure Run” t-shirt earns you extra raffle tix at all of the checkpoints.
We arrived early enough to take advantage of the vendor fair beforehand, which gave us a jump start on raffle ticket collection without actually running. One of the cool things about participating in the adventure run is that you get to demo vendor products for the run – anything from bright pink New Balance stability shoes to compression leggings to water belts to Honey Stinger chocolate waffles.
Unfortunately, the waffles aren’t gluten free. Oops. And the New Balance shoes were a mistake. Two days later, and my knee is ANGRY.
Decked out in demo gear. Ben just happened to be wearing a yellow shirt that wasn’t the official t-shirt, but it worked out well because people wanted to give him extra raffle tickets.
The race began promptly at 7:00pm with the unveiling of the course map. NOT on the map is a top secret location that’s worth lots of raffle tickets – you have to “friend” Road Runner Sports on Facebook and check back the day of the race to find out where the secret locale is. Road Runner is particularly good at the social media aspect of business (maybe it’s because running is so social in general). Today, I got a “Thank You” email from Road Runner sharing that they posted photos from the event on the Facebook page and we could go in and tag ourselves in them. Fun!
Thursday Night’s Map – They give you paper, a pencil, and a sweat-proof baggie to write down the stops, or you can do what I did and just take a photo with your phone.
Ben and I were certainly not fast enough to make all of the stops – perhaps that’s a goal for next time. But we did make it back in an hour having completed 3.5 miles and feeling pretty good about our raffle ticket haul. There were a ton of prizes given away – new sneakers, gift cards to local businesses, and more Honey Stinger Waffles…
Sadly, none of these tickets were winners for us. The evening ended at 8:30ish, with an after party held at a local pub – but we were pretty dang sweaty, so we excused ourselves by sharing that we needed to get home and walk the dog. Overall, a very cool event by Road Runner (that also benefits a worthy charity, Soles4Souls, through collecting old sneakers or accepting monetary donations). Check out the Adventure Run page to see if there’s one near you.
