Way on back in October, after just finishing the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in St. Louis, and possibly after a cocktail or two, my daughter told me that her gym was going to be sponsoring an AFAA certification for group instructor. AFAA, otherwise known as the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, is one of the top certifications for instructors and personal trainers in the industry. She was planning on taking it and asked if I wanted to as well. Yep! Sure! Sounds super!
Well, time went by, as time will, and Christmas and New Year; and then Sequestration and Furloughs began to loom on the horizon. How do I justify the money when Al is up for another surgery this spring and the furloughs are hanging over our heads like the Sword of Damocles?
Al said do it! So I did.
In order to take the course you must have some experience teaching a group (Taiji) , and have your CPR/AED certification. The AFAA Group Certification includes a 100 question test, which is based on this huge textbook!
You must show proof that you understand the different muscle groups by doing two strengthening and one stretching exercise for each group.
You also do a 10 minute workout routine showing that you can warm up, get intense, and warm down appropriately.
Finally, you show three levels of one movement, easy, medium, intense to prove you can adapt for different members in your group. I chose to demonstrate a plank.
Then you wait! Yesterday I came home and found an envelope from AFAA and as you can tell by the title of this rambling thing, I PASSED! I did it! So now to start work on getting certified to teach yoga, which is where I think Iíll start this path to a new life!
