Life without Percy

My large cat, Charlie, is missing his recently deceased brother. Not in a howling, sort of way. Or even a prowling sort of way. He did not (as I'm told some cats do) spend days looking for Percy. In fact since they were always both very outdoors cats, they weren't often in the same place at the same time. That, and the fact that Charlie always found Percy irritating because he wanted to snuggle up.

Now, however, something in Charlie's cat brain is missing Percy. This is manifesting itself in clinginess and attention-seeking. It's my attention he wants of course. Where he used to say hello to Percy and they would mill around together and dash into the kitchen ahead of me to be fed, now Charlie's doing all this on his own and he clearly misses the interactions he used to have.

This of course makes it LOADS easier for me to get used to being without Percy. Not.

The icing on the cake is that when I got home yesterday, there was a message from the vet saying Percy's ashes were ready for me to collect.

I'm expecting rain this afternoon.

I thought I had replied to this earlier. Or wrote and then computer sneezed and threw out my response? Was sad to read this earlier and it's still not better months later. I remember when we had my husband's beloved cat T'Pring put to sleep when she wasn't healing from some ailment and we were dating and working. But she was an only car. We have never had the experience you are having, with you and Charlie both missing Percy. I can only imagine!!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your fur baby! I currently have 3 cats and a 15yr old dog but have had many other fur babies in my past. Their passing has always been difficult. My 15 yr old dog is a West Highland Terrier and she had a Scottish Terrier as a sister who passed a little over 2 years ago. It took her some time to get over the loss. Big hugs from across the pond!

I am so very sorry for you and for Charlie too. Cats are very sensitive and they may affect indifference when they really feel a deep attachment. They are deep and profound creatures even whilst appearing to be simple.

I am continually amazed at how animals react to matters such as this. We baby sat our sons two cats for a couple of months and after they went to their new home, our cat was obviously missing them.

We had a black part burmese wonderful cat named Cleo who was actually a male but we thought she was a female when we named her/him as a kitten. She grew up with our Siberian Husky Clyde. Clyde was black and white with steely blue light eyes and when a little girl in a stroller saw Clyde she once screamed-its the big bad wolf-he's going to eat me! Cleo and Clyde loved each other. They greeted us at the door each day. When we walked Clyde in the nearby park. Cleo came with and dive bombed Clyde from the nearby trees. When Clyde was hit by a car in a snow storm when he was just 3 years old Cleo spent weeks walking around the house meowing and calling for Clyde with the meow question mark at the end of his voice saying where are you? It was heart breaking. 6 months later we brought in a new Siberian Husky pup who was smaller than Cleo at the time. My husband walked in the door carrying the new pup and Cleo climbed my husbands leg and with big eyes looked at us as if to say--what the heck is that thing? Cleo spent the rest of his days bossing the new pup even when she was many many times larger than him. We are now without a pet having had to put our 13 year old Bijon down at Xmas time. My husband says he can't take any more pets because its heart breaking. I disagree and think that a life without them would have been empty and sad. Enjoy your memories of sweet Percy. You were lucky to have each other :) It takes time but you will feel better about loosing him in a number of months and start to recall all the funny things he did to make you laugh and fret.

Reminds me of my cat (Socks), who also passed away years ago, before he passed he had a young female cat hanging around the house, they too were inseparable, an on the day he was killed, she meowed excessible for 3 weeks an then she disappeared an I'm sure it was from a broken heart. It was so sad, she'd look at me as if to say: "Where Is He".?

i am sorry to hear about your loss. I recently euthanized my cat due to renal and liver failure and it was incredibly difficult. My remaining cats definitely knew he was missing. I hope the pain eases soon for you.

My cat Cocoa was outside with his brother Beans. Poor Beans was attacked by a coyote and did not survive. This was over a year ago and it definitely affected Cocoa. He has found his inner Siamese and yowls for attention a lot. Before, his brother passed he was much more self-sufficient. They say cats aren't senscient but I disagree. I think they do mourn. My heart goes out to you. It is terrible when we lose a pet. I hope good memories can help you heal. emoticon

I am so sorry. It is always hard when a pet passes away. Last year we had to put down one of my dogs and it was terrible. Her sister looked and waited for almost a month. We were very worried but with time and reassurance we were able to help each heal from the loss. It's so cliche to say but time sometimes helps a little.

I'm sorry about Percy. When I lost one of my mastiffs, we buried him in a corner of our yard. My Shih-Tzu, Tiger, kept laying out there for about a month. We didn't even show Tiger where, but he knew.

I hope you have a nice Mothers Day,

Karen

Pet loss is very sad. But maybe the philosophy of Henri Le Chat Noir will help ease the burden of everyone in your home. You can find him at the following link. Or look him up online and try to get his very first and second messages.

He was a big hit in my city of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sorry about Percy. People love their pets and miss them. They are party of he family.
My daughter had two cats, and when one died them other missed him too. Cats are that way, I guess.

Good luck to you.
