Our trip to Philadelphia was delightful with a few light showers along the way. Ken got a great report from his doctors. His surgeon and his oncologist both did a complete breast exam. He goes back in August and has to have a mammogram at that time. It will be more than a year since his last one. Of course they only do it on his left side since they took his left breast with the cancer in it. (I will have to check and see if he gets a discount for half a mammogram.) lol!!! He is now two years cancer free!!! PTL!!!
I have to say that Ken loves all his doctors, nurses, etc. at the CTCA in Philadelphia. If I ever have the need for their services, I will definitely go there rather than any other cancer center including Pittsburgh and Morgantown, West Virginia, both of which are within an hours drive of us. The understanding and attitude of everyone there is absolutely fantastic!!! Everyone is treated like one of their family members.
We drive because Ken won't fly. If he flew, they would pay for his flight and mine would be half price. They pick you up at the airport in a limousine and return you in time for your flight home. In the winter time, they have a Humvee limo that they use. They put us up at the Radisson Hotel (we only pay $45 per night and they pick up the balance.) They have other places that you can stay but this is where they made reservations for us at the beginning of Ken's journey and we love it there!!! They also have a shuttle that runs and transports us back and forth from the hotel to the hospital. We get a breakfast buffet at the Radisson Hotel at no charge (other than we leave a tip) and free lunches and dinners for both of us at the hospital. They are currently building a hotel behind the hospital in Philadelphia. They are planning that staying there will be free to the patients and their families. They do all the tests and treatments you need on site and you see all your doctors in one building. They also have their own pharmacy. We love their setup. It is unbelievable!!! Ken and I have recommended it to several people. Most of them don't want to travel that far though. We treat it as a mini vacation for just the two of us.
I would recommend them to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer of any type.
I just wish more men would pay attention as breast cancer happens to men also!!! Most men don't believe that. I am so glad that Ken isn't afraid to discuss his breast cancer as it does bring awareness to more people. If men, as well as women, would immediately call their doctor when they notice anything different in or on their breasts, they can be treated and are often able to beat this cancer. Men and women can both do breast exams in the shower or laying on their beds. If you don't know how, you doctor can show you. It is really a simple procedure that can save your life!
Wishing all my spark family and friends a wonderful, happy and healthy weekend. Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug!!! We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day!!! Enjoy whatever life brings your way.

ADDITION TO BLOG: They do mammograms for men exactly the same way they do for women. (They use the same machine and everything.) The same is true for the breast exams.
