Where we got the heart

Friday, May 10, 2013

It probably isn't the first time this has been postulated, but only just recently, I realized where one of our best-known icons must have originated:

Everyone, at some point, has noted that the "heart" symbol has no likeness at all to the actual shape of a human heart. However, the human heart is associated with feelings (including, most especially, love), and love is associated with a kiss on the lips.

Next time you glance at your love's profile, you may look at it with renewed affection, because their lips form the very characteristic heart that we're all so familiar with: I imagine it's just a short jump from heart/love to kiss/love and noticing that the lips you love to kiss make this "heart" symbol naturally, when in profile. Neat!

Well, in youthful lips, while they aren't bright red, they're still fairly red, so I suppose that is probably a natural fit. Good point, and I am just guessing at all of this, anyway. :)

What an interesting observation. I suppose the red colour has to do with the blood (of life), or would that be some fruitful concoction on the lips for allure?
