March Into Spring Challenge - Recap

Friday, May 10, 2013

For the March Into Spring Challenge, our final nonfitness task is to post a recap of our progress, so here goes...

How have you been doing?

I’m pretty happy with this challenge, although I didn’t participate in the fitness challenges as much as I would have liked to after week 4. There have been a couple of reasons for this. First being, I got shin splints early in the challenge, and can’t do exercises with high impact for a while (i.e. jogging). Secondly, in week 5 I started doing a 12 week Weight Watchers at work program. Because of the points system, I’m eating fewer calories than I use to, even when taking my activity points into consideration. Because of that, I wanted to start out more slowly, and build back up to the amount of exercise I was doing before.

Have you met the goals you were wanting to accomplish? Were there things you didn’t reach?

1) My main goal for this challenge was to complete an 8 week "Couch to 5K" training program. This involves 3 interval workouts each week, which rotate between jogging and walking for approximately 30 minutes.

I did not complete this goal, due to the shin splints I got during week 2. Instead, I’ve focused on walking and hiking to strengthen the muscles in my legs, as well as some biking. This past week, I integrated a little bit of jogging into one of my hikes (in the woods on a dirt/wood chip path), and will continue slowly building up the duration.

2) My second goal was to do my best to participate in ALL of the challenges, and try to earn as many points for the team as possible.

I participated in most of the non fitness related challenges (except fruits and veggies). I realized during week 5 that l needed to do what worked best for me, not what was going to earn the most points.

3) My third goal was to post a weekly recap, with my results for each challenge as well as my weight loss for the week.

I did this after weeks one through five. At the point when I realized most of the team members were no longer participating, I kind of gave up on my recaps. I was doing this for accountability, and I now have other methods to keep myself accountable. As I mentioned, I joined a 12 week Weight Watchers at work program. After the third week, I was already down 6.2 pounds. Plus, I’ve signed up for another 12 week weight loss challenge at work.

4) Last, but certainly not least, I wanted to lose 10 pounds during this challenge.

This goal I easily met… I am down 11.0 pounds!

What would you change?

I’m a little disappointed with the SparkPeople challenges I’ve participated in so far. There are only a few people left by the end, which isn’t very motivational. This one was especially discouraging, since we seemed to lose our team captains as well. I think I will stick with other methods of accountability from now on, and won’t be participating in another challenge.

What do you want to accomplish in the will you do it??!

My main goal is to continue losing weight, as I have another 60 pounds left. I will do this by continuing to track my nutrition and fitness on SparkPeople, as well as track my points for Weight Watchers.

I want to continue working towards completing the Couch to 5K program. While I anticipate I will be walking during the Color Run in August (since I signed up my fiancé and kids as well), I would eventually like to run a 5K.

I would also like to broaden my horizons, and try some new fitness activities. I am hoping to go kayaking soon, and would be open to taking a Zumba class instead of doing DVDs / Wii.
