As you open your pockets to do a good thing and make
yourself feel good, please keep the following facts in mind:

The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans'
salary for the year was $651,957 plus expenses.

It is now called the March of Dimes because only a dime for
every 1 dollar is given to the needy.

The United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000
base salary along with numerous expense benefits.

UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern receive $1,200,000 per year (100k
per month) plus all expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE.
Less than 5 cents of your donated dollar goes to the cause.

and owner Mark Curran profits $2.3 million a year. Goodwill is a
very catchy name for his business. You donate to his business and
then he sells the items for PROFIT.
He pays nothing for his products and pays his workers minimum
wage! Nice Guy. $0.00 goes to help anyone! Stop giving to this man.

Instead, give it to ANY OF THE FOLLOWING

The Salvation Army Commissioner, Todd Bassett receives a small
salary of only $13,000per year (plus housing) for managing this
$2 billion dollar organization. 96 percent of donated dollars go to
the cause.

This email was sent to me by another Spark friend and I think it is worth people having a look and really asking themselves where their donations
are going. I had stopped donating what little I could afford (from my
pension) because I had heard a few rumours and had always wondered
what percentage went to those in need.

FYI, I give to the Salvation as I know the people who are most at need
receive much needed help and support.

When I was in hospital over 3 years ago I was talking to another patient there and she was telling how much she receives for collecting for charity. Can't remember exactly how much but it was a lot of money so I have never donated since then.
Another one I heard about was red nose day and how they spent the money, not good.

I know there are a lot of great charities out there.
I did not mean to offend anyone. Just be aware
that all charities are not the same.
JUst be sure to check out who you support, be it online
or asking the charity direct.

As a long time supporter of Unicef I got a similar email and I have changed where I support to the Canadian Red Cross and more local charities. It is disappointing because I supported unicef for years and years.

The Salvation Army is a good one I will keep that in mind.

I am most passionate AND compassionate for SmileTrain ..... a non-profit organization for children born w/ clefts ........ in dire need of surgery .......... I am so impressed w/ the many people who GIVE of their lives, from surgeons who do it cost free and take NO money on down the line ........ One surgery costs a mere $250 but every bit helps! I love these children and the cause if you have never heard of them .......... Please look them up and they wlll show pics and further explanations ............ Donating to this wonderful cause brings a smile to a childs little face that otherwise will never know what we are able to give freely each day ............a smile ................... emoticon

I saw where some people were upset by this post but I certainly can verify that some of this is true. My husband and I both saw on TV years ago how much Elizabeth Dole was supposed to be paid to be the president of the Red Cross if she had accepted the money, which she didn't, and it was $200,000 a year. It takes a lot of donations to make up that hefty amount and I feel it should be a non-paid position. Many charities are rip offs and a lot of the donations go to administrative costs, advertising, etc. I don't donate to charities any more and prefer to help local families i know directly.

This blog makes me feel very uncomfortable, Anna, I am sorry to say... You know I work for a charity and this feels like putting the picture of someone on all the walls in a town saying this person is a criminal without any proof. This 'article' doesn't quote any source, which really to me means it should never be copied and pasted.
Like Vigilantone, I suggest instead browsing the web looking for reliable, published and trackable information. It doesn't mean it will be 100% correct, but I think it will be less unreliable still.
I really hope people won't keep copying and pasting this.

Think before you donate....if your considering donating to a particular charity visit this website first. It breaks down each charity and lets you know how effective your dollars are.
