Since when is a size 7 considered big??

Thursday, May 09, 2013

So I was shopping yesterday and I overheard a guy getting help from a female employee. He was trying to figure out what size sweatshirt to get his wife and he was trying to compare his wife's size to this employee. Though kind of creepy, I felt bad for the employee because she was all of 4'8'' and his wife was nearly a foot taller. Seeing that I was listening, they both looked at me and I caved and helped the guy out.

They both said that I probably resembled the wife more and compared shirt sizes and then pant sizes. When I told them I was a size 7 in juniors or a 6 in womens, they looked mortified! I got the whole..."oh no you are totally a size 2" talk. Look, I am an athlete and my butt and legs have not fit inside a size 2 since middle school and I am quite alright with that because last time I checked, a size 7 is considered a medium!

It's kind of like the one season of America's Next Top Model where the "plus sized" model wore a size 9. What the heck?!?!? A size 9 is also a MEDIUM! How is a medium plus sized?

I guess it's a 'society' thing, but I just don't get it. I am by no means embarrassed to wear a medium in anything.

You go! I am trying to get to where you are. Women's size 6 for some of us is perfect!

It is all vanity sizing anyway. Today I am 20 pounds heavier than I was 20 years ago. Today I wear a size "4"...and twenty years ago I wore a size "8". Somehow I am inclined to believe the size 8 is a closer reflection of reality. Vanity sizing really just ticks me off to no end, I am not defined by a number.

And I agree with the other posters, the poor guy is doomed to failure. Best for him to have just gotten her a gift card.

You interpreted their LOOK and comments to mean one thing.
I believe there are more ways to look at it...that size 7 is "big" (to someone who is a size 4) but certainly NOT someone who is AVERAGE SIZE. Size 7 is not average nor "big".
Another way to look at it is ...they were "complimenting" you...telling you you look even more petite than your actual size LOOKED.

I wouldn't take it personal...and certainly not negative.
For one, he is A MAN. He has NO IDEA. He doesn't know we women hold quite a bit of "feelings" when it come to size, being compared to anyone and comments about it. I am sure all his efforts were not about anything more than simply trying to ensure what he bought would fit his wife/lady.
He probably has NO KNOWLEDGE of the complicated multiple American size CHARTS: whole sizes vs. S/M/L...and the fact there is such a thing as Junior, Misses and don't forget Womens.

I personally feel any woman who is a single digit size is on the small side. Not literally small or too small...but the appearance of those sizes LOOK SMALL TO ME. Its all in the eyes of the beholder.

That just chaps my hide! I can't stand that society's version of plus or aka overweight size is anything over a size 4. Not everyone is built the same and while I'm not condoning obesity I also don't think it okay to allow healthy average people to think that they are unhealthy and "overweight".

I think if you're comfortable with your preferred size, that's your size, no matter what others said :D
I was once told by the sales assistant that my size was S (for ladies shirt) but when I tried the clothes, of course it didn't fit coz of my chest so if I shop for ladies clothes, I usually go for L but for guys clothes, I can go for S or M. Sometimes I think we women are forced to wear tighter clothes than it should be and you will see lots of unflattering bulges or hard to breath LOL

I usually wear a sizr 8 petite, and really can not remember when I wore a smaller size, and I do weigh about 14 pounds more than I did when I was in high school, but, when I get below 120, I am too thin, so I guess as I have aged, my weight has just moved around, not as small in my waist, but shoot who is, that is 70 years old emoticon

Why would anyone want to buy clothes for anyone else??? I have hated the rare occasions anyone has bought clothes for me and my DH definitely knows better. Size and fit varies from shop to shop. The size I am in per one shop may be bigger or smaller than another!

He is in a lose lose situation anyway unless by some miracle he gets something that fits!

they were being very rude and untruthful to themselves
there is nothing wrong with a size 7
being in the size 18 and 20myself
I would thing I had died and gone to heaven to be able to get anywhere near a size 7
you are beautiful just the way you are
and I do not know about you
but I hate having to return anything back to a store emoticon

I'd consider myself quite happily "small" in a Size 7. I can wear a 6 or 7 in some pants now, but it's interesting that I remember when I was in high school and had lost weight and got down to 120 pounds I wore a 7. I am now 25 pounds more than that, so I do think sizes have definitely changed over the year. I don't think there was such a think as a size 1 or 2 back in the "olden days"! LOL

I was told I was getting too skinny when I was between a ladies 8 and 10, and I still weighed about 158 pounds. Perception is so skewed. Even now, people think I am smaller than I am, but my fat is proportional.

LOL, it's a typical good samaritan gets the shaft story. Get used to it friend. There will be a lot more and they will come in different forms, of course.

Poor man, he won't get it right whatever he buys. He should get something from a store that does exchange without hassle and hope for the best. I only ever take something from the rail after I've measured it with a tape, the sizes mean nothing, especially S, M and L as that varies within shops let alone brands.
Glad you were able to help, good Samaritans are hard to find

Me either! I weigh 120 lbs but my BMI makes me fat!!! I hate that. I feel at age 60, I've done pretty good. I haven't put too much weight on, but I definetly don't want to put on anymoreanytime soon!
