Need some advice

Help, I need some advice today! Yesterday I was asked at work to go out to lunch with our school nurse for nurse's day. I had missed the secretary's day lunch previously and the principal insisted that she buy me and the nurse lunch at a restaurant. I tried to avoid it, but I felt that if I didn't go she would miss her lunch out and the principal was pretty much very kindly insisting. I had brought my lunch so I was completely unprepared to go out, mentally. The nurse picked Chinese. I ordered a lunch instead of the usual dinner I would have ordered and only ate half, Today My feet and hands are swollen, not to mention a big weight gain which I always do after eating Chinese food. Can anyone recommend something that I could have eaten at a Chinese restaurant that would not have been quite so bad for me. I had Szechuan Shrimp. I didn't even enjoy it (probably the guilt). I know I should have declined going, but I didn't want to have the nurse miss her lunch out.

    We go to a local small chinesse resturant and I order chop suey, steamed brocolli or snap peas with chicken,
I ask for it prepared without sauce and salt.

I know it's not tranditional chinese food meals we are used to,\, but for me this worls as I really am trying to change my lifestyle.

    I feel your pain. Chinese restaurants are really hard to make sound choices. Steamed rice and stir fry chicken or beef with veggies is usually available and not too damaging. Sounds like you did your best. Today must be a water day. Drink lots of it, maybe even some green tea, to help flush the salt. Try not to feel too guilty. We have to live too! Sharing good times and food is part of the life experience. Don't deprive yourself of a good time or others from your good company.

    I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy your meal. Great job only eating half, you saved a lot of calories and sodium. Next time, you could ask for your meal to be prepared with out MSG, have it steamed instead of fried, sauce on the side, and substitute brown rice instead of white or fried rice.

    Salt is always a problem there but the good news is that in a few days the weight gain and bloating will be gone. Too bad the guilt stopped you from having pleasant memories of this dinner. Our weight will always go up and down but life is about making good memories for times when you are down or are unable to do things anymore. Don't pass up the opportunities, instead make the best of them and don't let guilt deter you from living!!

  what a choice . go to lunch or stay in office . then have the other person choice Chinese . I love Chinese but always have the problem that you described . swollen fingers . do not know what to do either .

    They always have "wok smart" choices at Chinese restuarants that are veggies steamed and not stir fried. Never eat white rice either. The sodium in Chinese food is always enormously high, so avoid anything that has a lot of sauce with it. I always go for the wok smart and veggies.
