I saw what you did there

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Now you can ask me what I expected from W*M, but they have whole wheat tortillas for $1 so I go there to stock up now and then. I've long been suspicious about W*M for having drinks in 3 different aisles of the grocery section. I guess now that I use a fitbit I don't mind the runaround so much. But I can't help feeling like I'm a rat in a lab at W*M, and they are constantly crunching my data to find out how to get me to consume more.

Today I was going across the back aisle, which is a cold deli wall with the yogurt and cottage cheese, and the cookies and crackers were facing it. I thought "that's a strange place for that." Then I was checking nutritional secrets of success on a SparkCoach assignment and realized "they're putting junk food on the perimeter on purpose!!!"

Maybe next time I go I'll just buy tortillas. And maybe some fruit. I really should only shop W*M with a written list.

I think you're onto them. Stay on your toes next time you're at W*M. Don't fall for their marketing ploys.

Between my regular Ralph's grocery (which is not my closest Ralph's, since I moved), and the special things I have to pick up at Trader Joe's, Mother's Market, another grocery store chain, and Target, I'm terribly glad I haven't also found something I need at W*M. The good news is that if you find yourself habitually buying crap you don't need there, then the tortillas will stop being a good value for you and you can go back to buying them at your regular store.

I have two alternatives that are ALWAYS running buy one get one free sales on at least one major item in each food group. And then canned goods 10 for $1. I even found cans of sodium free organic tomatoes and low sodium organic chickpeas on sale. And I didn't need to buy 10 to get the sale price. And the one store is selling my favorite Xtreme Wellness Spinach tortillas. WooHoo!! What did we do pre WM? I'm not sure I remember. Eat healthier? Or just buy smarter?

We really should avoid it at all costs, but here they really are the only alternative. emoticon

Ohhhhh! That's really, really mean. I think that's also why they have a bunch of crap food at the check-out now, too at my grocery store. If you shop the perimeter, they're going to try to get you in the check-out line. emoticon
