Food logging

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

So I've been getting pretty spotty about my food logging lately. I know exactly why, too. Since I've been on the 7 fruit and vegetables program, I have been feeling MUCH better and I have lost some weight. So, I don't feel like I should have to log, because I know what's doing it.

I also don't much like logging. It takes up time and I feel kind of self-conscious about it. In some ways it feels like a "punishment." Like, oh, I can't manage to eat well by myself so I've installed this self-monitoring behavior so I will be sure to eat well because I'm watching myself. Calorie logging was something I did when I was fat. Now that I've lost most of the weight I want to lose, I feel like 'I shouldn't have to log.'

Well, today I was reading the chapter about nutrition in a book called "Rowing Faster" and they were talking about the right mix of carb, protein and fat, and they just sort of casually mentioned that it was easy enough to track all this by having your athletes keep a food diary, and all of a sudden it was like a light went on and BING!

I don't log food because I "have to" or as a "punishment." I log food because I am interesting in monitoring my body's performance and obtaining data about what my body does when I fuel it different ways.

I log food because I AM AN ATHLETE.

Well damn! There's one behavior problem GONE! LOL!

I also feel a bit resentful sometimes about logging food, and this gives a new spin on it - I can do it to support my life as an athlete. Thanks for the perspective - I like it!

    Good insight.

I use a nutrition program called Diet Power. I like that it tracks almost all of the micronutrients. I figure if there's ever an issue with my diet, I can show my doctor what I'm getting.

I don't log food on SP because it's more work. As far as SP is concerned, I photosynthesize. emoticon

    Ha! Well done!
(Besides, if you ever develop a food sensitivity, just look at the data you'll have!)
