Taste Buds

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

About ten years ago my daughter introduced me to natural peanut butter. Natural meaning the only ingredient is peanuts (and it needs to be refrigerated).

This is the daughter who in fourth grade became a vegetarian, is into everything organic, and has a yoga studio. ( I could really learn a lot from herÖ)

Anyway, back to the peanut butter...In the last ten years I have only used natural peanut butter, usually a brand called Teddybear.

My youngest son just joined a store called BJ's. It's a store that you can buy things in bulk, and boy, did he. One of his purchases was a huge (gallon?) double jar pack of Skippy peanut butter. His new favorite snack is peanut butter and banana sandwiches (wasn't that Elvis's favorite?)

I stuck a spoon in the jar (part of my mindless eating habit) and was I ever shocked. It was so sweet it was like a dessert! I didnít like it. I checked the ingredients and sure enough, the second is SUGAR.

I had heard your taste buds change, and now I can testify ITíS TRUE.

My 24-year-old daughter has been a vegetarian since she was 12. I've learned a lot from her. And I like the natural PB, too. Interesting blog . . . Thanks! emoticon

I love natural PB and won't go near Jif, Skippy, or any of the sweetened ones. My partner and his son don't like the natural stuff (not sweet enough, go figure, but that leaves it all for me, woo!) but I like my PB butter to taste like peanuts. They end up making PB cookies with Skippy. This is also good for me, because that means I won't eat the cookies either!

I use Teddie, which is natural. You can find it in Market Basket or Trader Joe.

I've eaten Teddy for years and had the same experience not too long ago!
    Why do they do that?
    It's so unnecessary!

I bought some of the more natural ones and it's hard to adjust - but once you do it's good for you and your body!

Thanks for the inspiration! I usually buy Jif Reduced Fat, but natural would be better... I wonder if my kids would object...

I hear you!!! We go to Belize for the winter months and it is next to impossible to find natural peanut butter there. YYUCK...don't know what is worse...the sugar or the salt. Have to admit, I too love peanut butter and bananas. The bananas are abundant and cheap in Belize. We might, next winter, buy raw peanuts and try to make our own peanut butter. That should be an adventure. Enjoyed your blog. Best wishes to you and Happy Mother's Day.

That's one of my faves, too!!!!
On toast so it gets melty and crunchy at the same time.
