baby chicks, etc.

good morning everyone. well the baby chicks have their names:
Anna Belle, May Belle and Lulu Belle
Flossie Anne, Sallie Anne and Marvel Anne
Nellie Mae, Ellie Mae and Daisy Mae
they are all doing well--I was worried a bit about little Daisy Mae--she is the smallest and seems to be a bit slow out of the gate--but she is better this morning--she may just be the late bloomer of the group. today I did see her eating and she joined in the baby feeding frenzy when I scattered hard boiled egg yolk on their chick crumble. the first day or two of a chicks life is very traumatic when they come from a hatchery. they hatch out, are sexed and separated, thrown into boxes and put on a plane for shipment. then when they arrive at the feed store they are sorted again, may get chilled in the process, picked up, hauled home and then they can finally settle into their nice warm home. its a heck of a lot of stress and they sometimes have to go for 2 days on just the energy from the yolk they absorb into themselves before they hatch. so you give them extra electrolytes and a little bit of table sugar for a day or two to help them out. they are so sweet--the dogs are beside themselves wanting to go into my workroom to find out what is making those little cheeping sounds. dorijane just lays in front of the door and whines. its been a very long time since I have had baby chicks here--and I have really missed it.
in other news--lettuce, radishes, spinach etc.are sprouting in the veggie bed--new strawberry plants are taking hold and looking nice. next on the agenda is fencing--I have seen one set of deer tracks out there.
my shoulder is just killing me--its an old familiar ache I deal with every year--somehow I hurt it digging. have never been able to quite figure out what I do exactly--but it happens every year. have to just take aspirin and soldier on tho--not going to run today--that aggravates it--just a nice long walk instead. hopefully by Friday I will be able to run again. I did 5.28 miles on Monday and a 4 mile walk with Marianne yesterday.
our double flowering cherry is in full glory and the lilacs are just beginning to pop. I see my fringe tree is budding out and the daffodils are just about finished. hopefully we will get some rain today--its amazing how rapidly the ground dries out even after the hard soaking rains we had earlier this month.
have a great day, everyone!
