Latest Update on Hubby

Tuesday, May 07, 2013

Hubby Update: The saga of Bill's illness journey just seems to keep growing, but we are hopeful it will all be dealt with and behind us eventually.

He has had two weeks of chemo treatments. This week is his off week and he will see the cancer doctor on Thursday so we'll know more about that after Thursday.

In the meantime, last Thursday the cancer center ran blood tests and found Bill to be dehydrated as well as malnourished so he received two IV bags to hydrate him plus another bag of calcium.

He then had an appointment with his primary doctor last Friday who discovered he has a hernia which is quite large. Therefore, he was in the hospital over the weekend to deal with the hernia and run more tests. The only thing seemingly accomplished while there was that he received continual IV of fluid and was told that he can't have the hernia repaired, but needs it repaired, as long as he is on chemo. The primary doctor says he is of the opinion he could have it done because of the type of chemo he is receiving so that is a question we need to ask and get clarified from his cancer doctor.

Also, he is retaining a lot of water (he's put on 30 pounds in approximately 2 weeks) so today his primary doctor tells us he is concerned that he has nephrotic syndrome because of the water retention as well as the excess protein is now in his urine. So today he had an ultrasound of his legs to insure there are not any blood clots which is one concern which apparently he does not, at least not yet.

So tomorrow we see a specialist about the nephrotic syndrome and he starts a 24 hour catch of his urine for further analyzation.

We keep hoping there is an end to it all. On top of all this other stuff, yesterday his glasses broke and we learned that they quit making that frame so we have to order new ones to the tune of $450+.

Anyway, I will keep you updated as we learn more.

Wow - this is so much to have to deal with. I'm praying with you that you get the answers you and the drs. need to get everything taken care of. Does his dr think that some of his pain is related to the hernia? I looked up nephrotic syndrome (and MGUS) so I could understand it better. The water retention sounds very uncomfortable as well as frustrating so I'm glad he is in hospital where they can treat it better (although I'm sure that's the last place Bill wants to be). May courage and strength be yours. Hugs, CJ

Everything is so overwhelming. I don't know much about the chemo & hernias, etc. But I can offer a suggestion that may lighten your burden in the eyeglass area. I use for prescription eyeglasses. Their prices start at $6.95, not including shipping. I've gotten glasses for myself & my sons and they are very reliable. You need to get your prescription and papillary distance from your optometrist.
