Sometimes writing and checking in online takes a back seat to living. That has been the case over the past week. Travel, an important conference presentation, being mostly internet-less for a few days, catching up with tons of old friends and getting a nasty spring cold in the middle of all of this have all contributed to a crazy 5-6 days. I arrived home late last night and have spent the day trying to do those mundane things to recover: napping, doing laundry, cleaning out ye olde inbox.
Yet something is a little different. I find myself wishing I could get on the bike and go for a long ride, or head out on a short run. I'm glad to be back home where I can eat in my usual style-- mostly fruit and lots of veg, some protein, not much meat, few carbs. Eating different foods while traveling is exotic for the first day or so, but quickly becomes unsatisfying in a particular way. Conference food (mostly stale coffee and sugary pastries, but sometimes also wine and finger foods) is not helpful for reaching my goals, and I try to avoid it (which results in way too many protein bars consumed over a 5 day period). Being home today (and being able to recover from the nastiness of this cold at home) has been nice.
Mostly it was a really good weekend of being in Boston, catching up with lots of old friends, and doing a lot of work between lovely walks in the sunshine. Some things to think about over the next few months, and lots of work ahead. But there are a lot of great friends out there who care about me and will support me as I move forward. Looking forward to my dissertation proposal defense next week, and getting ready to kick some butt!
