mystery plant

Tuesday, May 07, 2013

Help me identify this plant! It's growing beside the garage. There is nothing else like it in the yard.

We think its a veg, looks like a broccoli stalk like thing!

Don't know what it is, but I'd be interested to find out when it finishes. My neighbor calls the stray plants that pop up " volunteers" emoticon

    Might be wild mustard?

If they are collard then they are wild ones because I have never seen it like that and my late husband grew them all the time. Looks like a broccoli plant on the top but not sure about the flowers and I do know that broccoli do have flowers when they go to seed

Suechris may have solved it. The collards in the hydroponics are smaller bushier and have no flowers but the leaf shape is the same. The chickens gobbled them down.

Looks cruciferous(related to cabbage)- I'm guessing brussel sprouts.
Wait and see if it develops the little heads after the flowers drop off.
You may have a very small garden.

We get interesting new plants every year. They are brought in on the wind and from bird droppings. A couple of them have been very pretty flowers when they have grown up. I often keep them until they flower and then remove them before they go to seed so I don't have an invasion of agressive weeds.
