2 for 1 day! A solution to my morning workout woes.

You get a 2 for one deal today!  Sorry, about that. Just needed to vent a little with my son on the earlier one and wasn’t sure where to stop and start a new topic, so I decided to just write 2.

Well, since I have started this journey I have been struggling on Tuesdays. As a divorced dad I have the kids Tuesday evenings after work until about 8:30. Then Thursday evenings is an overnight. Tuesdays is hard since if I waited to work out until after I take them home, I would run out of time at the gym. If I went while they were there, it would mean I don’t get to see them. So, I had been trying to get up and go to the gym before work.

The first super early workout was not bad. But I have noticed each time since then it has gotten worse. It just takes me too long to get in a groove. And while the workout is the same length as normal and the calories burned comes out about the same, it just doesn’t feel good. If that makes any sense at all.

Last night as I was contemplating all this, I decided I would not get up earlier than normal but would also not hit the snooze. So, I got up at the time the alarm went off. I took my time getting ready and then decided to go for a walk instead. I finally figured out this could be a day off the bike and I can walk instead of ride. And I can do a half hour in the morning and a half hour walk later in the day. This way I get in 60 minutes of exercise and don’t feel like it was a wasted day.

And the best part is, not getting up super early and then taking my time got the cobwebs off the brain. I enjoyed the workout and got a good sweat going even though it was a little cool. This means I can still get good exercise in. Won’t miss time with the kids. And won’t feel rushed trying to make it early or late to the gym. Plus the outside is just better right? Plus this will force me to walk more which I want to do anyway as a cross training activity.

I think I finally hit on a good solution. Feeling pretty good about it right now anyway. The good sign is that I didn’t quit trying to find the solution. 4 months ago the solution would have been to skip it altogether. I know I may not always feel this great about it, but right now it seems like the proverbial win-win situation!

    Tuesday evenings are usually too booked up by the time I get them dinner and work on homework. It is something I plan to look at more as we get in to summer though. Put the bikes on the car and head to a bike path. That kind of thing. Youngest is 9 and my son is 16. Actually both go up a year over the summer.

    That is awesome.. what about doing something exercise like with the kids ? I don't know the ages.. but could be fun .. shooting hoops, frisbee ? I am glad you kept looking for a solution.
