Diversifying My Cardio Workouts

SparkCoach asked me to blog about my action plan for diversifying my usual workouts, the assumption being that they are in a "plateau" phase. Well, that assumption is valid. As I stated in a previous blog (and thanks to those who responded to it so thoughtfully), I'm more or less treading water until neck surgery--now rescheduled for the end of the upcoming week--presents a stiff challenge (literally!) to any kind of workout.

My workout norm recently has been a lot of power-walking, combined with some jogging. Usually I do this at an indoor track, walking at a fast pace of about 7 mph for 60+ minutes, with jogging intervals during the last 15 minutes or so. Also I do about 30 minutes of warm-up/cool-down stretches. I try to do this routine 3-4 times a week. When I can't make it to the gym, I walk the dogs around the neighborhood at a much slower pace, for roughly 4 miles.

The diversification during the next week will be in some combination of elliptical and stationary bike, and perhaps a little light work with weight machines. Gotta be careful with this last, though, as my trainer has cautioned against anything that might complicate the neck-and-shoulder issues I've been having. I'd add swimming if I weren't such a poor swimmer--can barely make it across the pool!
