Fast food. Is it really ok in moderation?

Monday, May 06, 2013

Absolutely not! I haven't had fast food in 3 years. I kid you not! I mentioned this in another blog entry. Some one said to me that we shouldn't try and eliminate it completely from our food intake A little every now and then is OK. Really? Hmmmmm......

I don't think so.... I look at it this way, we quit smoking because it's bad for us. We are constantly trying to eliminate unhealthy food and substances from our lives. And we are constantly looking for healthier foods to eat.

Why shouldn't we eliminate fast food from our diet? I did some looking and I found the ingredients that are in fast food.

The results should shake you up....

Here's what I found on the website that I am giving a link to so you can look somemore.....

Here is just one example of what McDonalds put in their foods. The unhealthful ingredients in McDonalds’ Chicken nuggets (straight from the McDonalds’ web site) include:

sodium phosphates;
bleached wheat flour (nutrients removed);
food starch-modified (likely genetically-modified);
dextrose (sugar);
partially hydrogenated soybean oil and cottonseed oil with mono-and diglycerides, (trans fats);
Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil) (trans fats);
TBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleium dervived product;
Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent (a form of silicone used in cosmetics, and Silly Putty).

PETROLEIUM DERIVED PRODUCT?
ANTIFOAMING AGENT?!!!! USED IN COSMETICS AND SILLY PUTTY!!!!!?

WOW REALLY!????

I feel ill just reading that!

This is just the beginning.

    I rarely eat fast food. Usually the only time I do is when my wife and I are driving to visit her family in Atlanta. There aren't very many non fast food choices along I-95 and I-85. Other than that, the only fast food place that I like is Chick-Fil-A.

    But the chemicals in fast food are very disturbing. One of my summer jobs when I was in college was at Taco Bell. I remember one day I was unpacking a shipment of meat (taco beef) and I read the box and I was astounded to find the words, "Caramel Color Added". I was amazed and disturbed that the Taco Bell meat that was served was not naturally brown.

    I do admit I eat fast food, probably twice a week, I am trying to make smarter choices when I do...usually it is carls jr, don't really like McDonalds.

    What I do at carls jr is usually I get the grilled santa fe chicken, lettuce wrapped no bun and no sauce, so in reality it is simply a grilled chicken breast, a mild green chili, cheese and lettuce....and it is delicious...I will have to look and see if they use any petroleium derived products....YUCK...that does sound gross...

    Yuck! What an eye-opener. I will admit, DH and I sometimes get fast food on a night when I am completely wiped out....most of those nights we will do cereal (oatmeal) but we will get the occasional burger. I do like Wendy's salads, though.

    I haven't eaten at McDonalds for at least seventeen years outside bottled water. I do occasionally get stuff from other fast food places, but far less than once a month. I would figure it's closer to once a year. I figured that occasionally isn't bad, but that's a personal choice.
