Never done a blog

Monday, May 06, 2013

I have never done a blog (don't have a face book) so this is my first.

From my first statement you have guessed my age is over 30 something. haha
I'm over 50 something. And I want to get healthily.

I started this journey with Sparks in March. Then moved into a new home is April and got side tracked. Now I'm back. Only a 2 week side track this time. Not months or years!!!!
As is my usual.

I have been reading up and watching videos on all that is available here on Sparks.
Boy is there a lot!!!!
But I have a problem with; I want to do everything right. The first time.
I want to eat right, do the right workout, buy the right foods, join the right teams, read the right information, etc. etc..

I don't give myself a break for just starting to choice to do the right things. I am so much harder on myself than I am on the rest of the world. Crazy huh?

Maybe when I keep on making the right choices for this one hour and one day; I can remember that its ok that I don't do everything JUST right but that I am doing something to make a change for myself that's good.

Yes, this is a change for life and you may not get it perfect right out of the gate. You will have to cut yourself some slack or else you may give up and go away again. This is a change for life and making small changes that you can live with and adapting into your life is what will stick with you. Like CaycesMom, I started exercising by walking. I could walk 30 minutes on the treadmill. Luckily I do not have issues with chronic pain, just chronic laziness. But I wanted to become a runner. So I started following a program called Run Your Butt Off, similar to the Couch to 5k program. I started mixing in walking and running and then I found out our local running store as a running class so you can run with a beginner group. Now I have done 3 5ks and I am signed up for 2 more and I have lost 19 lbs - this is since the day after Christmas.

Am I perfect about my eating - no. Do I deprive myself - no. But most days I stay within my calorie count and I try to work out 5 days a week. But if I get off track, the next meal or the next day, I just start again.

So don't be too hard on yourself!

Hi CDRAWDY!! I know what you mean about striving for perfection. I also have that mind set, but the longer I am on here, the more I have learned to let it go. I have found it nearly impossible to hold myself to my ridiculously high standards (only for myself, I would never treat others that way). One thing I read on someone's page was a quote that said "One Choice at a Time". That really resonated with me for some reason.

When I first started exercising, I could not even make it around my block (.5 mile) without stopping several times. I have chronic pain, so I would literally be in tears during my walks. I used to beat myself up for not being able to go further or faster. But, I did not give up, I just kept going and doing a little more each time. Now, I am working on jogging and I am only doing it in intervals, but I am getting better at it with each week. Last night, I came home from work and I felt awful, but I still got on the treadmill and did my three miles. I was so happy I did.

I have began to realize that every little choice really does matter/add up. So, I hope you can appreciate all the positive changes you are making and don't beat yourself up if you're not perfect because no one is.
