Do you like encouragement from strangers?

Monday, May 06, 2013

While I was leaving the rec center this morning after spinning class, there was a very heavy guy going in with his workout bag over his shoulder. I had a very strong urge to tell him how great it was that he was going to work out. I get the same urge whenever I see someone out running. But I think it may be weird for that person. I know I wouldn't mind someone doing it to me, but some people don't like that stuff.

Would you guys be weirded out? Haha

I have never minded the comments from strangers. But I know there are some people who do. I think just say something, if they don't say anything don't worry about it. At least you are trying.

It's a tough call! Even though it's intended in the most positive way as an encouragement, some folks will take it as "You're so fat - I'm glad you're doing something about it". Other people will take it in the spirit you intended. In general I try to stick with more generic stuff ("Not too crowded today") and if I see the person often enough graduate to something more personal (WOW - you're here more than I am!).
