What is Epigenetics?

Monday, May 06, 2013

I have gotten to the point where I truly believe this...
I only wish I had learned this earlier in life.
Even moderate amounts of processed foods seem to sabotage my efforts and undo my progress.

My Doctor neighbor was telling me about his transitioning into the field of alternative medicine. He is working with a specialist in that field and they can actually see the affects of a proper diet from the cellular level.

I'm learning about EPIGENETICS
It's the development and maintenance of a person's health as orchestrated by a set of chemical reactions that switch parts of the genome off and on at strategic times and locations. Our cells dynamically respond to the environment.
Stress, diet, behavior, toxins and other factors activate chemical switches that regulate gene expression.

I was watching Dr. Terry Wahls, MD
Food As Medicine: Brain Health, part 2 (10 min)
on a lecture on what foods to eat to be healthy.

Great information. It never ceases to amaze me that doctors seem unconcerned about what you eat when diagnosing you. I am glad your neighbor is looking for alternatives.

Enjoy the turmeric, but use it sparingly because it is bitter tasting...

I totally agree about the processed foods. They are the pits and I would love, love, love to eat primal/paleo but I seem to not be able to give up all processed foods.

I am determined to eat more fruits, veggies, greens, but can't do the organ meats

Did I dream that she said to eat beans and rice too?

Very interesting. I had read a lot about this a few years ago: one of my sons has severe autism and there have been studies linked to behavior.

I have suspected this for years and have read so much more about this in the past 10 years. So much has been devoted to science relieving symptoms that they have forgotten to treat the problem---- our food.

My daughter has been telling this for many years. I am finally convinced, we are what we eat. I am trying to live a healthier lifestyl by eliminating processed foods. I just hope it's not too late.

It is really scary when you look at it. I was thinking of growing herbs, and my DH said not to plant them in the ground, because who knows what the soil has been treated with by our landscaping company and before the house was built they probably used nasty stuff to keep termites away... Container gardening for me...

Now I have a reason to stop eating them. Thanks for sharing this information. I am going back to utube to finish watching all 5 episodes.

Absolutely fascinating. Wish I understood more of the science.

When people blithely say that they don't see anything wrong with GM (genetically modified) food they're ignoring the fact that we currently know so little about how our organism actually works! It's insane to be tampering even more with our food supply when the research into how food affects us is essentially in its infancy. But when there's a buck to be made.....

This is an interesting topic. I do believe that more will be learned as time goes by about the benefits of whole foods and the harmful effects of processed foods. American foods are filled with far too many chemicals.
