Celebrating the Possible!

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Another year, another 5K has come and gone.

Yes I've committed to doing this one 5K a year for the past 3 years to "mix it up" and challenge myself in a way that is out of the ordinary for myself.

While it IS a good idea to mix it up, I got to thinking about another reason this 5K feels like a worthwhile commitment to me: it reminds me of what I can physically DO now that I COULDN'T do at 300+, certainly not 400+ pounds...and that is WAY worthy of CELEBRATING! :-)

And you know...I have no crystal ball, and heaven forbid the thought, but there may come a day when for who-knows-what-reason when I WON'T be able to jog a 5K. All the more reason to do it while I can and at least have the memory of it.

As I did last year, I rode my bike the 10 miles into town for the 5K and rode it back home afterward. And THEN got out to mow the lawn! Lots of go, go, go that has me WAY whupped! But it was a super day out in the sunshine!

Here's a coupla pics...the line up for the 5K:

and a post-5K sweaty Don:

Make it a week ahead filled with SPARK!

Don

Don...
You have accomplished a lot with your journey in 3 years. Like I said before you are such a great inspiration to me and everyone on Spark People. It is people like you that keep me going when I want to give up being all I keep doing is gaining & not loosing.

A big emoticon to you. Hope the darling wife don't mind.

I'm glad you are revelling in you ability to do it: yay you! Love the pictures. (I can't run a 5K myself anymore . . . and so wish that I could. XC skiing and golf and elliptical don't really substitute!)

It takes quite a lot to persuade me that a person is not a good person . . . and that's mostly because I'm happier believing most people want to be good people and in fact will be if given a chance . . . and then maybe another chance or two. Just like when I screw up I appreciate another chance or two! Or three . . . .

Hmmm, your sweaty shot is MUCH better than mine!

I could deal with a time that wasn't what I wanted - but it's not much fun to be on vacation & not able to walk much, but this too shall pass.

Thanks for your support!

You have some MAJOR energy, Don, which means you're doing something incredibly right in your life plan. It's such an impressive feat of tri-athlete exercises for one day!

Over 2000 people got to remind themselves of what they were capable at the Binghamton Bridge Run Sunday. Great weather, great race, and incidentally, great portrait of Don Doorn.

Sounds like you did a unique triatholon today. Ride, run and mow (instead of swim)!

Congrats ... from an older (than you) man who still feel the spark and ability to swim, ride, and run
